"Doctor, we need to go." Caroline whispered to her friend as she slowly moved closer to him without looking at him.
The shrill noise of the sonic screwdriver sounded beside her and she realized that he hadn't heard her. The next moment the lock, the Doctor had tried to open, clicked open and he quickly opened the gate to release the ten humans inside the room.
"Doctor, we really need to get out of here." Caroline tried again as she watched the hooded figures move closer. Their pale faces and red eyes almost lit up in the dark and Caroline felt her own eyes grow darker as she prepared to fight the vampires.
Beside her the Doctor finally turned to follow her gaze and an "oh" escaped him as he realized the danger they were in. Caroline fought the urge to roll her eyes at the Doctor's surprise and she quickly pushed him behind her, backing towards a narrow staircase behind them.
The humans - or should she call them food - they had rescued were still occupying the stairs as they ran towards their freedom so Caroline needed to stall the vampires, who had now noticed them.
"Run, Doctor. I'll take care of them." she told him as her fangs appeared in her mouth and she stepped forward. They were standing at the bottom of the stairs and she could feel the Doctor's hesitation behind her. "This will get violent, Doctor. It's either them or us and the humans. So go. I'll meet you outside."
The two vampires were now right in front of her, but the Doctor was already running up the stairs and she could hear him hurrying on the frightened humans. The hoods dropped from the vampires' head and their red eyes looked at her calculating.
Caroline had known it was mistake to come to Volterra, Italy as soon as they had picked up the rumors about the people who resided within the walls of the castle. The stories about their immortality and beauty had set off red warning lights in Caroline's mind but of course the Doctor had to investigate.
That had led to the discovery of a whole coven of vampires called the Volturi - and a whole new kind as well - with a creepy leader, who apparently had heard about Caroline and wanted to recruit her.
She had politely declined, but Aro - as the leader was called - had begged her to reconsider and she told him she would give him an answer after some sightseeing.
The Doctor had quickly agreed to get out of there until they made yet another discovery: humans were being kept in a cellar underneath the castle for when the vampires were hungry. Soon the pair had been on a rescue mission and they had managed to find a small gate that led straight to the humans down a small staircase.
Which had all led to the situation Caroline was standing in now. She didn't know much about these vampires except for the fact that they were practically indestructible and for some reason didn't go out in the sun. So all she had to do was keep them occupied until she could run outside herself. Hopefully, the sunlight would burn their skin and prevent them from following her.
"Hello." Caroline said calmly as the vampires hissed at her.
The vampires eyed her for a long moment before one of them charged and Caroline all but punched through his chest to grab his non-beating heart.
