How to Have a Dance

Three weeks later, and Jack was back on his feet. My book club was blooming. Everyone was coming, and it was a blast!

I let everyone choose what books they wanted to read, and even if someone didn't want to read that particular book, I found a way to make it fun. Sometimes, unintentionally. I do make mistakes. And they are always laughable.

Jack had by now almost fully recovered. A pair of crutches here, some finger splints there, but nothing major.

The winter dance was also doing great. Everyone was signing up because I had come up with a great theme.

Basically, there was no theme. For those people that want something to go off of, the theme was winter. Predictable, right? Well, it was great. Those people who wanted to go their own way were encouraged to do it. It wasn't really a formal dance either. Most people looked really nice, but some people were planning to come in costumes. Which is fine because it's not formal. It's all about you doing you. Expressing yourself, showing people who you really are for one night.

It is a night of no judgement. Who cares what Sally looks like? No one.

"Welcome to the dance, everyone! I hope your having a great time. This is going to be a night for surprises, and if you leave early... Well, you are going to be missin' out on some pretty great stuff. We are going to be having an outfit contest. There will be different categories for costumes, dresses or suits, and other. I told you to do you, and you all did! The voting for this will open at seven o'clock. Now, enough of me talking. Let's get dancing! Have a great time!"

Finally, I could go and just hang out with Quincy for a while. I didn't need to do anything until 6:40 to make sure everything for voting was just right.

Quincy danced for a few minutes, then we just walked around and mingled. It was nice because I didn't have to act as hostess.

Everything was so, crazy, I guess, that it was easier to have fun. I know that doesn't make sense. Basically, people can do whatever and they can just be themselves so they really don't care what anyone else has to say. This is great because the school is very separated between nerds and jocks and beats and everyone.

Tonight, everyone was anyone.

I was just me.

I wasn't usually me. I was just a facade, not a person. But now... I was this person that I didn't I was. I was falling hopelessly, beautifully, and completely for Quincy.

Everything about him just screamed gorgeous, there aren't enough words to describe how I feel about him. He drove out to help me through the thing with my brother. I just was so happy that I had him.

I have to say that I think he honestly made me a better person.

Everything was going perfectly, when Lydia ran up to me.

"Uhh... Hey. So. Um, there's a bit of a problem. I can't explain it, just come see for yourself."

"Um, okay." I was already worried.

I was doing my best to just make it a happy night for everyone. My next step in doing that was including everyone with the music.

I had everyone send me an e-mail or text or just give me a note saying what song they would love to hear at the dance. This provided plenty of variety and individuality for everyone to hear at least one song they adored.

In a way, the theme for the dance is everyone just being themselves.

Now, what am I going as, you might ask?

Well, I am just going as me. I'm wearing a nice skirt, a pretty blouse, and some high heels. It's comfortable for me, so I can take care of anything at the dance, but still look and feel pretty.

When I got to the scene, I didn't immediately see what was the problem. Then I noticed that some people were looking down at something like it was an endangered creature.

It turns out that Lucy had fallen while she was dancing and was not laying on the floor with her leg at a very strange angle.

I sent Lydia to find the nurse somewhere in the room, and Quincy to look too. She could be anywhere.

I cleared everyone out of the way and sent more people to find a chaperone. I wanted to have the nurse be in charge of everything. I knew I should probably call 911, but I just wanted to hand over the situation and step out. No more hospitals for me.

But that's not how it works out. I don't know why, but people just kept falling. And by more people, I really just mean Lydia. She went down next, and for her it was her arm.

Guess who went with her to the hospital? Her best friend. Guess who that is? Me. So back to the hospital.

It was horrible. I had finally managed to get over my brother and push him out of my head, but now I had this! Are you kidding?!

I just couldn't do it anymore. We got there... And I practically lost it. I just say there by Lydia, just thinking, literally being no help whatsoever.

Eventually, Clarissa came and I went back to the dance to finish stuff up. I had out Quincy in charge. The dance was supposed to keep running.

I got back, and it was finally time for this disaster to be over.
