"Stay together," Gandalf whispered as we ran the other way. We ran out behind a boulder, seeing the Orcs running past not too far ahead. Thorin stopped, but Ori didn't see him. Luckily, Thorin was able to pull him back. We ran a little further until Gandalf stopped us. Pressing our backs to the boulder we were hiding behind, we stayed quiet, listening to the sounds of the pack. There was a slight growl from above us and Thorin looked up before looking past me, to Kili, eyeing the bow and arrow. Kili nodded, understanding as he armed the bow. Taking a deep breath, Kili ran out, shooting the arrow at the Warg. Both the Warg and its rider fell off the boulder to our level. While the Warg screeched in pain, the rider got up, trying to battle. The Orc roared, running towards me and Dwalin. Dwalin hit the Orc with his ax, but it got back up. It ran at us again, but this time, it was not the Orc that got hit. Before I knew what had happened, I felt the cold metal of a sword, piercing my side. I let out a small whimper as the Orc smiled, showing off his nasty teeth. Dwalin and Bifur attacked it after seeing what it had done. I looked down at the sword that was still stuck in my side, shocked that it had happened. Both the Orc and the Warg were dead now and the Dwarves were trying to focus on me.
"Almi!" Kili yelled, running to my side as I fell to my knees. Oin came over, examining the wound.
"You have to pull it out," I gasped, trying to catch my breath. The pain was getting worse. "The Orc pack knows where we are; they're coming. You need to pull it out." Kili looked over at Oin, unsure if it would be wise.
"It's the only way for us to keep moving. She can't run with a sword stuck in her side," Balin said from behind Oin. Kili nodded and I put my hand on his arms, bracing myself for the pain that was soon to come.
Oin grabbed a hold the hilt, "Ready?"
I nodded, "Just do it." He pulled quickly and I screamed, squeezing my eyes shut. I held onto Kili tightly, leaning my forehead against his shoulder as the unbearable pain slowly died down. The Orc pack was getting closer and Kili picked me up, carrying me as he ran. The Orc pack surrounded us, more coming up on each side.
"Kili, put me down. We both need to fight," I told him as Thorin yelled for him to shoot the Wargs.
"I'll fight. You don't do anything." I opened my mouth but then changed my mind, closing it and nodding. He carefully put me down and I staggered a few steps away from him. I heard Thorin call my name and my head whipped around to see the Dwarves disappearing under a rock. I ran over as fast as I could before sliding down into a cave. Crashing into a Dwarf, I clutched at my side in pain. When I pulled my hand away, it was covered in blood. The sound of a horn made us all turn to look up at the opening to our hiding spot. Hooves followed slightly after, then the shrieking of Orcs dying, and then there was silence. All of a sudden, a body fell through the opening, rolling before stopping at our feet. It was an Orc with an arrow sticking out of its throat.
Thorin moved forward, ripping the arrow out, "Elves."
"I cannot see where the pathway lead. Do we follow it or no?" Dwalin yelled from the back of the cave.
"Follow it, of course," Bofur yelled, running after him. The rest of the Dwarves followed suit.
"I think that would be wise," muttered Gandalf. I slowly stood up, with the help of Gloin. The pathway narrowed, making it impossible for two people to walk side-by-side. The path ended and we came out on a cliff, overlooking a beautiful city. "The Valley of Imladris," Gandalf said from the back of the group. "In the common tongue, it's known by another name."
"Rivendell," I whispered, a wide smile on my face. It has been a long time since I have seen this breathtaking place.
"Here lies the Last Homely House East of the Sea."
"This was your plan all along," Thorin accused, "To seek refuge with our enemy." I rolled my eyes at his stubbornness before closing them. The movement made me lightheaded. Come to think of it, I was feeling really dizzy. My knees buckled, sending me to the ground. Re-opening my eyes, I saw the worried faces of both Kili and Bofur. Their faces blurred as my head spun and I closed my eyes again. I was vaguely aware of the fact that I was being carried down a flight of stairs and when whoever was carrying me, stopped, I slowly peeled my eyes open. We stood before a flight of stairs. Two figures stood at the top, unmoving, as two more descended. Focusing my eyes on them, I saw that it was a male Elf and a female Elf. I immediately recognized the She-Elf. It was Annanthi; one of the close friends I made during my stay here. She was the daughter of Lord Elrond and had a secret only a few, including myself, knew.
"Mithrandir," the male called, making Gandalf turn to look at him.
"Ah, Lindir," Gandalf replied. The Elf put his hand over his heart, greeting him.
"We had heard you had crossed into the Valley," Lindir said in Elvish.
"I must speak with Lord Elrond."
"My Lord Elrond is not here."
"Not here? Where is he?" A horn sounded behind us, causing us all to turn. Across the bridge came a dozen or more horses with Elves sitting upon their backs. Thorin shouted something in Dwarvish and the Dwarves closed ranks, putting me and my carrier in the very middle. The riders surrounded us, going in circles.
"Gandalf."
"Lord Elrond. My friend. Where have you been?"
"We've been hunting a pack of Orcs that came up from the South. We slew a number near the Hidden Pass." Elrond walked up to Gandalf, embracing him in a hug. "Strange for Orcs to come so close to our borders. Something or someone has drawn them near."
"That may have been us." Elrond surveyed the group of Dwarves as Thorin pushed to the front.
"Welcome, Thorin, son of Thrain."
"I do not believe we have met."
"You have your grandfather's bearing. I knew Thror when he ruled Under the Mountain."
"Indeed? He made no mention of you," Thorin accused, his stubbornness coming out again.
Lord Elrond spoke in Elvish and Gloin got upset, "What is he saying? Does he offer us insult?"
"No, Master Gloin, he's offering you food," I said weakly. That's when Elrond and Annanthi noticed me for the first time.
"Almithara, what a wonderful surprise this is," Lord Elrond commented, bowing. I was set down and I carefully bent over, bowing slightly. Annanthi came running over to me, engulfing me in a hug, but she squeezed me too tight and I hissed in pain, clutching my side again. Pulling away, she looked down at my wound, her eyes widening. I coughed and covered my mouth with my hand.
"'Thara, your mouth." My eyebrows furrowed in confusion at what she had said, so I lifted my hand back up to touch it. My mouth was wet with blood. I starting coughing again and more blood came up. The amount of blood in my mouth made it hard for me to breathe. "Father, she's dying!" Anna said and he hurried over to examine me.
"We must get her to the healers immediately." Lord Elrond picked me up as I gasped for air. A minute later, I was set down on something soft and I wondered what it was, but a burst of pain shot through my body. Anna's face appeared in my vision briefly before it was gone and I heard someone yelling for her to get out. The healers started working on my wound and the pain got worse. Screaming, I writhed in pain and the healers struggled to hold me down. Feeling my teeth grow, I started growling at the Elves around me. I heard a soft voice say my name and when I looked over, I saw Kili standing a few feet away. He slowly walked over to the bed and gently grabbed my hand.
"Almi. You need to calm down; you don't want to hurt them." His whispering voice, telling me to calm down and that he was right there for me, was enough to make the transformation stop. My features went back to normal and my eyelids grew heavy. The last thing I saw, before the darkness overcame me, was the sight of Kili holding my hand up to his lips.
