Prologue
"Dad!" my eight year old self yelled, running through the glass doors leading inside to the dining room that joined to the kitchen, my blonde haired father was stood at the counter in a pair of jeans and a shirt drinking a coffee and reading a newspaper, his head snapped up when I came barreling inside.
"What is it kai?" he asked and set down his coffee as I jumped up into his arms.
"I did it, I did it!" I beamed, squeezing his neck as hard as I could.
He chuckled, the sound vibrating through me too, "Okay kiddo, if you stop crushing my neck, i'll come watch."
I jumped down and bolted out the glass doors again, I ran across the grass to the netted trampoline at the bottom of the garden, I dived through the opening of the net, standing up just as dad came out the door.
"Hurry up!" I started jumping as my dad jogged the last couple of steps to the net.
"Watching?" I asked.
"I'm watching kiddo," he smiled.
I started jumping, building up my momento and I flipped backwards, once, twice, and landed on my feet again with a bounce. I looked over to my father and saw the proud look in those warm brown eyes and I knew I would never forget that look.
"Well done Kai, but thats enough for today, you've got your gymnastics training tommorow and you don't want to over do it," he extended his arms and I got through the net and jumped into them.
"But dad if I'm going to be the best gymnast in the world I need to practise," I glared at him.
He chuckled and set me on the grass, then rufflled my messy, bright blonde hair that was the same colour as his.
"I know but even the best need to take a break now and again," he patted my head and I huffed. I turned around quickly and made a go at escaping back onto the trampoline but he caught me and through me over his shoulder as I started laughing.
"But dad, I need to practise!"
"Tough." He said as he carried me back into the small two bedroom house.
He set me down on a stool at the counter and turned to fill up a glass of water at the sink so I made another go at escaping.
"Dont even think about it."
I froze, turning around and saw my father crossing his arms and leaning against the counter, I shot him a sheepish grin and then he picked up the glass from the counter and handed it to me. I gulped it down greedily not realising how thirsty I was. I handed him the glass back and he put it by the sink with a smirk, "you almost drowned yourself drinking that fast."
I grinned and made a turn to go back outside when i heard a stern "Kai."
I turned round with puppy dog eyes.
"You need to take a break," was all he said and I sighed in defeat, knowing now I had to definetely work on those puppy dog eyes. His phone started playing an annoying ringtone and he fished it out his pocket and answered as I went through the arch in the dining room wall that led to our green walled living room. I flopped down onto the brown sofa, sinking into the green cushions and waited for my father to finish the call, it was the weekend and we always did something on saturdays then I had gymnastics training on sunday. He came through the arch with an apologetic expression.
"Sorry kiddo, work called and theres a problem so I need to go check it out." He flopped down beside me as I frowned.
"Mandys coming round in ten minutes, Im sure she can keep you entertained," he said trying to cheer me up.
Mandy is my dad's sister, she helped out a lot since my mother died while giving birth to me, she looks almost identical to dad with the same eyes and hair. I had their bright blonde hair but I had my mothers bright blue eyes, my father told me he called me Kai since it means the ocean and when I was born he said my eyes were as blue as the ocean.
"Okay," I mumbled.
"Hey, I won't be gone long okay? then I'll take you to see that new movie you want to see, yes?"
I smiled up at him, "Yes."
Ten minutes later my aunt came joyfully through the door, we both got up from the sofa and she enveloped me into a hug, she always smelled of perfume and baked goods since she baked all the time.
"Hows my little soldier?" she asked and I smiled.
"Fine mandy-moo, guess what?" I beamed and she chuckled.
"What?" she smiled her loving smile.
" I can do a double back flip!" I exclaimed excitedly.
"Thats great sweetie, you will have to show me later, yes?"
I nodded eagerly and heard my dads familiar chuckle, "Yes later, don't over do it Kai."
I grinned, "I won't."
"Right," Mandy took a box out her rather large handbag, "I made cookies."
My eyes went wide and I almost ran after her as she went through to the kitchen but my father grabbed my arm and chuckled as he pulled me back, he kneeled down so he was my height.
"Hold on there kiddo," I turned to him and he smiled, those warm eyes lighting up even more, "You don't over do it okay? I know one day you will be a brilliant gymnast but you have got lots of time to fufill that dream. Always fight, but do it smartly or you will fall down because you have exhausted yourself."
I nodded and smiled, then through my arms round his neck, "Okay."
"Never give up on your dream kiddo but things take time, remember that."
He pulled away and I nodded determined.
He smiled with pride in his eyes and ruffled my hair, "I love you kiddo."
"I love you too, dad."
He stood up and gave me a smile, then turned and left...
Little did I know that was the last smile I would ever see from him again.
