Y/N sat at her dining table, typing away at her laptop. She was just about finished her latest project for work when her phone rung. She answered and put it up to her ear.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Y/N, its Clint. Do you have a minute to talk?"
"Sure, what's up?"
"You were one of the best agents SHIELD ever had and I know you have saved so many lives and probably even the world in some-"
"Really?"
"What?"
"Clint I thought better of you than to use flattery. I'm your sister, what do you need?"
"I know you bought the cabin out there to stay away from everyone else but could you keep a guest for a little while?"
It was true, Y/N had never really been the one to love crowds or a lot of people in general, but when you're a spy, you kind of have to put that aside. Almost her entire life hadn't been about herself but some sort of mission. And that had taken its toll on her when, after a serious injury, she was removed from the field. She would never be able to take a desk job with SHIELD but she had never known anything else but the organization. Her normal was the battlefield or undercover so when suddenly you are no longer allowed that, it's a shock.
You have to find a new normal and for Y/N it had been getting a small ranch up in the mountains. While she had been at SHIELD she had lived in the barracks provided, ate the food provided, and was hardly ever in anything but her uniform when not on a mission. Over the years her bank account had grown. She wasn't rich, not by a long run. She had enough to buy the small ranch, some horses and chickens, plant a nice vegetable garden, and live comfortably for a few years. But as soon as she got settled Y/N started looking for a new career to sustain herself. She had started a small graphic design company. Everything was totally remote and online, so she never needed to leave the ranch except for grocery runs every couple of weeks.
This was her new normal and she loved it here.
"Depends on who's the guest and how long a 'little while' is."
"You ever hear of the Winter Soldier?"
"Yeah, the guys a ghost."
"Well, not so much anymore. I know you haven't been watching the news but recently the UN tried to pass the Sokovia accords, basically, all people with powers have to be registered-"
"That's a terrible idea."
"Yeah, I know, unfortunately not the entire team agreed. We had a little fight, but the fight wasn't just about that. The Winter Soldier is Bucky Barnes, Steves old friend and member of the Howling Commandoes. He also apparently killed Tony parents," Clint let out a sigh, "You know what, its a really long story but the summary is Bucky was brainwashed by Hydra to be a killing machine and now he's back to his normal self --- well, mostly. He just needs a place out of the public eye and quite to find himself among the mess Hydra left, and I thought you might be able to take him."
Y/N sat in silence for a moment considering the request. What surprised her wasn't the fact that a 100 something-year-old was an assassin she was more surprised that Clint was willing to send one of the most famous assassins to be with her at her ranch. Alone. But Clint knew better, he wouldn't send Bucky to her unless he knew that the former assassin was right enough in the mind to not be a major threat to his sister. Besides she could handle herself.
"You still didn't tell me how long he'll be here."
"Honestly, I don't know. Just until he gets better."
"Alright, I'll take him. When will he be here?"
Clint was silent for a moment, then said in a nonchalant tone, "15 minutes."
"Wait, what? Did you even care if I said yes or no or were you just going to drop him off without asking and hoping I picked him up with the mail?"
"No, I knew you'de say yes, so I decided to not waste any time."
"And if I said no?"
"Then I would have dropped him off anyway, I knew you couldn't resist him. The guys like a sad puppy that's been kicked, you wouldn't be able to help yourself."
"I'll see for myself." She was slightly angered that Clint just decided to drop in without warning and with a famous assassin but she knew he was right. She would take Bucky in. She had been captured by Hydra and kept for a few months before SHIELD could find her. Those months were the months that she had nightmares about the most.
"I'll go get the guest bedroom ready. See you in 15?"
"Yeah, bye."
"Bye"
WIth that Y/N hung up the phone. She saved the work on her computer and made her way to the guestroom to prepare for Bucky.
---------------
The loud bark from her dog alerted Y/N to her guest's arrival. She finished putting the pillows in place on the bed and then walked to her front door. A black SUV and medium-sized silver pickup pulled up in the gravel lot. Ares, Y/N's German Sheppard and alarm system, ran to the door of the SUV and as Clint got out he covered him in love, aka slobbery kisses.
The door to the pickup opened then closed and at the sound of the last action, Ares immediately moved to view the new guest. As soon as he saw who Y/N assumed to be Bucky Ares let out a bark and moved in between Y/N and Bucky.
"Ares, come." The large dog immediately moved to Y/N's side, "It's all right boy, he's a friend."
With Ares calmed down both Clint and Bucky walked up to Y/N. Clint gave her a hug but Bucky stood about a yard away and didn't engage Y/N.
As Clint hugged his sister he whispered in her ear, "Thank you."
After the embrace, Y/N took a step toward Bucky and held out a hand, "Hi Bucky I'm Y/N Barton."
