LIfe with someone beside Ares wasn't as bad as Y/N thought. It helped that Bucky was fairly quiet. Once he had gotten settled Y/N put him to work. She had him cleaning the horse's stalls, cleaning the house when needed, and they traded on and off for cooking. The guy could make a mean omelet and Y/N didn't even like eggs.

Ares had taken a special liking to Bucky and his metal arm. Bucky could throw the ball so much farther than Y/N that Ares stopped coming to her for playtime but went straight to Bucky. Aside from cleaning and playing with Ares Y/N had given Bucky her Ipad to 'catch up' with the world. They had discussed him getting a degree online but he pushed to wait until 'he realized all the choices he had for his future.'

It had been a full two months since Bucky had arrived and he was slightly more open and vocal than when he first arrived. But he locked all the windows and doors at night, any loud or sudden movements of noises made him jump, he never kept his back to Y/N, and whenever he was outside he was constantly scanning the entire property. He never really let Y/N touch him and if she did try he shut down and disappeared for the rest of the day. She took it slow at first but she knew what he was going through and knew he needed a shove.

One day during lunch, after a particularly quiet morning, she finally spoke up.

"What will it take for you to trust me?"

"It's not you I don't trust." Bucky shot out before he even thought about what he was saying.

"You're scared you'll hurt me?"

"Sometimes I can't control it and not because of the conditioning but just because of the memories. I get sucked back to a bad time and can't control what I'm doing."

"Did you fix the fence post?" Referring to the task she had given him that morning

"huh?" He hadn't got used to the way that Y/N switched between topics so fast." Oh, yeah. It's all done and the tools and supplies are back in the barn."

"Thanks, now go get in some workout gear and meet me in the garage."

Before Bucky could protest, Y/N walked out of the room and left the assassin there confused. He finally gave up trying to figure out what she was trying to do. Doing some bench presses wasn't going to be super helpful. He changed and made his way to the garage. She was already there scrolling through her phone.

"On the mat." She said without looking up.

As he was about to step onto the mat, she spoke again, "Shoes and socks off."

He glanced to her feet, as he followed her order, she was already barefoot in a pair of leggings and a loose tank top. She finally set down her phone and walked to face him on the wat. She took up a defensive pose.

"Attack me."

"What?"

"You heard me. You won't ever fully recover if you're scared of yourself and you accidentally hurting me. The thing you don't realize Bucky is I'm plenty capable of handling myself. Now Attack me."

"I can't. I don't want to hurt you."

Y/N straightened and put her hands on her hips, "Do you want to get better?"

"Yes."

"Really? Because it seems with the way your acting you don't." She took a step closer and poked him in the chest to emphasize the point."You won't let anyone get close to you." She shoved him away and he stumbled back a few feet. "I tried to get you to start going to school so you could get a normal job or life. You wouldn't do that and you're not even willing to try this. It's starting to sound like you want to stay this way. Like you want - no - like reliving every memory of you killing someone! Of you hurting and almost killing Steve!"
