"Too used to being a couple?"

Betty's P.O.V.

Three months after the break-up...

I still loved him.

It had been three fucking months, and he'd gotten over me, moved on, but I still loved him.

Loved him, loved him.

As in the same way as before.

As in more than friends.

As in I wanted to hold him, kiss him, be with him, I wanted him to be mine and mine alone.

Loved him, loved him.

When I got to school, and I saw him, Forsyth Pendleton III, Jughead Jones, my heart hammered in my chest. It happened every time I saw him, let alone thought of him.

I still thought we were right together. I still thought we were meant to be together.

Even then, though, I could feel that thought slowly withering away every time I saw him.

You might feel it, Betty, but it doesn't mean he does.

He's over you. You know that.

He said he didn't want to be the obsessive ex-boyfriend, but now you're being the obsessive ex-girlfriend.

I gave my head a sharp shake and approached Jughead as calmly as I could.

"Hey, Juggy," I said.

He glanced over at me and smiled. My heart sped up.

"Hey, Betty."

I stared deeply into his eyes and froze in my place. The next thing I knew, my hand was cupping his face as I brought his lips down to meet mine. But before they met, we stopped, only centimetres apart now.

Jughead cleared his throat and slowly backed away.

"Old habits die hard, huh?"

For a second, I thought that voice came from my head. Then I looked over to see Cheryl Blossom walking towards us, cherry-red purse dangling off her wrist.

"Too used to being a couple?"

I snorted but didn't reply.

This wasn't the first time we'd almost kissed or held hands or done anything remotely couple-like after our break-up because we were so used to being together. Still, it just didn't feel like he felt what I was feeling, especially since he was almost always the one to pull away.

Cheryl smirked, flipped her hair over her shoulder, and walked away just as she spotted Toni. Then her face lit up and she started walking faster.

I turned back to Jughead and forced a smile. "So, uh, where's Archie?"

"Over there with Reggie," Jughead said, waving a hand over by the school.

Archie and Reggie were leaning against the wall, caught up in a conversation about God-knows-what.

I turned back to Jughead and glanced away two seconds after.

It was always awkward when this happened.

Suddenly, the school bell rang. I jumped out of surprise and Jughead chuckled.

I playfully glared at him and shoved his shoulder. His grin grew and he snatched my hand. My cheeks turned red and I waited for him to let go, but instead of doing that, he tightened his grip and led me towards the school.

People glanced over and whispered, but I just went along with Jughead.

What is he even doing?

He walked me to my locker, then slowly released my hand.

"Juggy?" I whispered.

He looked at me expectantly.

"Can we talk later?"

He thought about it for a moment, then said, "Yeah. Sure."

I processed what happened as he walked away.

This was so confusing.
