Jughead's P.O.V.

I shouldn't have broken up with her.

Goddammit, why did I do it? Just because she didn't answer immediately to an extremely difficult question?

Yes, because of that. I asked her if she thought we would end up together. And in that moment of hesitation, it meant she wasn't sure. About us.

But I still loved her.

The problem was that I had no idea if she'd take me back.

I could tell she still had feelings for me, but I hadn't done a very good job at showing her that I loved her back. If I told her now, what would she say?

I had a feeling it wasn't going to be an I love you. Maybe more of an And you tell me now, even though you knew I never got over you?

"Juggy?"

I looked up at Betty, sitting across from me at the cafeteria table.

"You haven't taken a bite of your sandwich. That's not like you at all, Jug. Are you okay?"

I opened my mouth with the intention of saying that I was fine, but I wasn't, and I was done lying. I slowly shut my mouth and shook my head.

Her face dropped, lips drooping down into a frown. "So what's wrong?"

Archie, Veronica, and Kevin all glanced over. In the distance, at another table, I saw Cheryl and Toni look over, too.

I took a deep breath and said, "Can I talk to you somewhere else?"

Betty looked at me for a second, confused. Then she nodded and followed me into the hallway, which was mostly deserted. When I still hesitated, Betty took my hand and led me outside of the school and to the back. There was definitely no one here. Good.

Betty stood in front of the wall, expectancy in her eyes, catching the light just right so that they beamed beautifully in the bask of the sunlight.

"Juggy, what's wrong?" she asked, cupping my face with one hand. Her thumb slowly stroked my cheek. Then she realized what she was doing and dropped her hand.

Or started to.

I put my hand over hers, keeping it there, then moved my hand to her face.

She looked up at me and gulped, not saying anything, not doing anything.

Then, slowly, we pulled ourselves closer, me and her both, until the gap between us closed and our lips met.

There, we didn't do anything for a moment, just took a second to process this, us together, here, in this moment. Then she pressed her lips against mine and kissed me, and I pulled her closer, and she pulled me closer.

I pushed her back against the wall and lifted her up to my level, kissing her harder.

I wasn't about to go too far here, obviously. Neither of us were that naïve. But I was still going to soak in this minute, soak in whatever I could.

After about God knows how long, we pulled apart and I set Betty down.

She looked at me and a weak smile played at her lips. Then she cupped my face again and whispered, "I love you, Jughead."

"I love you, too."

She let go of my face, frowned, and said, "If you love me, then why did you break up with me?"

I thought about that for a moment. Then I said, "Jealousy. Plain and simple. I was just really mad and jealous, and I thought it would look stupid crawling back now, and I thought that you'd be mad at me. I knew you still loved me, but how would it look coming back after all this time?"

Betty glanced at the floor. She took a deep breath and said, "Well, it does upset me that you came back now if you loved me and knew I loved you. But at least you came to me, and that's all I care about."

I swooped Betty into another kiss, one hand cupping her face, the other on her waist, and she slid her arms around my neck.

I started lifting her up again when I heard sneakers brush against grass a few feet away and turned to my right to see Veronica gripping the edge of the school and leaning over the side. Archie had stumbled and was now closer to us, in plain sight.

"Seriously?" I said as I dropped Betty back down onto the ground.

"What are you guys doing?" Betty said, anger creeping into her voice.

"Oh my God," Veronica said, completely ignoring Betty's question."Are you guys back together?"

"What?" Cheryl's voice came around the corner, and she stumbled past Veronica and into my view.

Toni came up beside Cheryl and smirked at us. "I knew this would happen eventually."

She held out her hand. Cheryl rolled her eyes, pulled a crumpled twenty dollar bill from her purse, and slapped it into Toni's open palm.

"You guys bet on Bughead getting back together?" Veronica said.

"Yeah, and I just made twenty bucks." Toni slipped the twenty into her pocket.

"You thought they wouldn't get back together?" Archie asked Cheryl.

"Toni bet on them getting back together first, so I had to bet on them not getting back together. Stupid bet, because it was obvious they would come back. They always do."

Betty blushed, cleared her throat, and asked, "How long have you guys been there?"

"Long enough," Veronica said.

"As in we followed you here immediately," Archie added.

"What did I just hear?" Kevin's voice came around the corner before he stepped into view.

"What did you just hear?" Toni asked.

"That Bughead is back." He looked at me and Betty. "Is that true?"

"Gossip spreads fast," Betty muttered, then louder so Kevin could hear, "Yeah, we are."

"Wanna bet that they'll break up soon?" Cheryl said.

Betty crossed her arms and glared at her. Toni shrugged. Betty flipped her off, and Cheryl and Toni laughed.

Then the bell rang, informing us that it was time for the next class.

I took Betty's hand in mine. She smiled, kissed my cheek, and we walked to class together.

Yeah, I know, a lot of this was remained unresolved, but that was kind of on purpose. I honestly have no idea what I'll do for the next one, but I'll think of something. Or, if you have any suggestions, please message me.
