As the days went by Hina spent more and more time with Windy. Which resulted in new ideas. It helped that Hiccup was there urging her on. He even snuck into the village to help her make a support rod for the Night Fury's tail fin. It had been damaged beyond natural repair, but with a special rod that held the tail in place, the fin was as good as new.

Almost.

When Hina had first put it on her new friend, Windy had taken off, eager for the skies, not taking notice of the brunette who was barely hanging on. It was then that she realized that the support rod needed to be adjustable so that Windy could do her turns and aerial maneuvers.

Hiccup had helped her with that as well (After he stopped laughing at her for being caught on Windy's tail). When he couldn't sneak into the village, he would help Hina design the tools such as the saddle and stirrups and she would do the rest of the work. She had to do it at night, so Ryker wouldn't find out, but that was fine with her.

During the day, there was training. And in Hina's opinion, she was getting much better. Pretty soon, she was at the top of her class. After crash landing Windy, she found some dragon nip that worked very nicely with the gronckle. Eels were another tool she learned to use. She wouldn't forget it any time soon for Windy almost blasted her to Valhalla when she found one in her basket of fish. The Changewing despised it greatly and made it easy to find it and send it back to its cage. The green and yellow deadly nadder was quick and nimble, but hiding in its blind spot and scratching it into oblivion seemed to make the dragon adore the brunette warrior.

Arctic was becoming rather irritated with how well Hina was progressing, Burnhead was still withholding a little, but Large Chow was becoming interested. Both he and Hina were now experts on the hunter's code, and other dragon knowledge. He seemed quite amazed with how much Hina had progressed and almost apologized for the event in the woods.

Almost.

Fish was, as usual, Windy's favorite. Hina made sure to bring some to her every visit. Of course she also made time to check on Hiccup. His arm was getting better and his spirit had risen since the day she met him. About a month has passed from that time where they had broken out of the prison.

One day, Hiccup made an announcement.

"I think it's time you try a free flight on Windy."

They were in the gorge when he had suggested his idea. The female night fury had taken a liking to Hiccup and thought this idea was terrific. Hina was a little hesitant. Windy had only recently thrown her into a tree (by accident) while they were tethered to the ground.

But when Hiccup practically begged her, she agreed. So the trio took to the sky. Little did they know that someone was up and about in the woods near the shore where they were going to fly.

------------------------------

Hiccup, I am really starting to question your training methods! Hina thought to herself as she and Windy flew thousands of meters above the island.

She could practically hear him laughing at her.

They were up in the air nearing the sea stack ridge that was on the west side of Estwin. Hiccup's idea was to go through the stacks and get Windy and Hina to trust each other. Hina thought he should be more focused on her trusting him.

They had to do a couple of small and slow maneuvers through the stacks while Hiccup watched from the ground. If all went well, he would let them speed it up.

Hina helped Windy angle herself to line up with an oncoming bridge of rocks.

"You ready girl?" Hina asked her dragon. She received a roar of agreement and as they leaned into a dive, the high whistle of a night fury echoed across the sky.

"Wahoooo!'' Hina yelled. She had never felt so alive! Up in the air, the adrenaline made her feel so free. The wind whipped past her, blowing her hair left and right. I should probably cut it. Or braid it. She thought to herself briefly, before focusing back on the task at hand.

"Come on girl! Come on!" she urged Windy and herself as they brushed the top of the water and shot through the arch. A small group of Terrible Terrors flew above them as she chanced a glance upwards.

She turned back to the front just in time. A large sea stack was almost upon them. Yanking Windy to the left they almost collided with another one.

"Okay!" Hina shouted over the wind. "Let's go up!" Windy grunted before slapping Hina on the cheek with one of her flaps. "Wha- oh right! Sorry." the brunette glanced at her handy cheat sheet, then flicked her foot in the right position that adjusted the support rod for Windy's tail. Then they shot towards the sky almost immediately.

Hina's stomach squirmed in excitement.

She was loving this. Flying in the sky. Higher than the island itself. "This is amazing!" Hina called to Windy, the dragon crooning back happily.

Then it all went south.

The wind picked up and yanked the cheat sheet from its holder.

'NO!" Hina cried out. Hiccup had told her not to lose it. How was she going to guide Windy now?" Speaking of Windy...the Night Fury stopped at her riders' shout and as the girl reached for the paper, she unhooked herself from the stirrups and saddle. Too late, she realized what had happened.

"WINDY!" she cried out. Her dragon screeched in alarm and tried to fly after her but with her tail unbalanced she only managed to start spinning.

"What? No! Windy stop that!" Hina tried to calm the Night Fury down but only succeeded in grabbing onto her tail and being spun around as well.

Feeling sick, the young rider somehow managed to pull herself back into the saddle using the dragon's spines and hooked her feet back into the stirrups. Together, she and Windy rightened themselves, the ground screeching towards them. With the cheat-sheet held by her mouth, Hina's cry of terror was drowned out by the shrill whistle of the wind. Giving one last desperate tug, the dragon and rider pulled up just in time but were now streaking towards an area of sea stacks where the fog was so dense you couldn't see a thing. Frantically trying to read her sheet Hina quickly decided that there was no time. Throwing aside the fluttering paper, she leaned down and the two shot forwards with incredible speed. Trusting their guts the girl and dragon swerved the stacks looped upside-down passed the beach and then shot out to the sea in a barrel roll. Once they got their balance, and the viking got her breath back, Hina threw her hands into the air, a cry of triumph escaping her lips. She glanced towards the beach onto a tall tree where Hiccup was seated. He waved at her enthusiastically and she waved back.

Windy trilled happily and swerved to the left Hina not missing a single beat. They landed on the tree, bending it almost in half and she held out her hand for her friend.

"You did it!" Hiccup exclaimed as he got on. "I know." Hina patted Windy's head as they took off. "We really did it." She glanced at the boy.

"Thanks."

"For what?"

Hina rolled her eyes.

"You know what, you knuckle-head."
