Chapter 3: The Truth
It was Friday morning and I hadn’t talked to Daman since Monday when I had also had that terrifying nightmare that had seemed so real.
The déjà vu feeling still reappeared with fierceness every time I heard Daman’s name like an itch I could not scratch.
So I had decided I had to solve the mystery of Daman’s name.
I flicked the switch at the plug on, and started up the ‘family’ computer.
I perched on the stool as it loaded up, and whistled tunelessly to myself, listening to the ‘Welcome’ melody coming from the PC.
I clicked on Internet Explorer, and then clicked on ‘Favourites’ and Google.
I typed in ‘Daman origin’ in the search box and pressed enter.
186,000 hits appeared and I sighed, this was not going to be an easy task.
I followed the first hyperlink and struck gold. It was exactly what I wanted.
It said:
Daman – Origin and Meaning of the name
“tamer”
[2 syll. da-man, dam-an ] The boy name Daman is pronounced DEYMahN KEY. Daman's language of origin is Old Greek. Daman is a spelling variant of the English Damon.
Daman is not popular as a baby name for boys. It is not in the top 1000 names. In 2007, within the group of boy names directly related to Daman, the English Damon was the most widely used.
Baby names that sound like Daman include the English Daimen, the English Damon, the English Daemon, the English Damen, the Slavic Damjan, the Russian Damyan, the English and Scandinavian Dana, the Spanish Dani, the English Dannie, the Hebrew and English Danny, the German Dany, the Russian Danya, the English Darrin, the English Darron, the English Darryn, the English Dayton, the Welsh Deian, the English Deion, blah, blah, blah…
I basically quit paying attention here and skim read the rest. That is until I saw this:
Dutch Daan, the English Dameon, the English, German, and Polish Damian, the Spanish Damián, the Portuguese Damião, the French Damien, the English Damion…
The French Damien…Damien Thornes? Now, that sounds even more familiar, but somehow still not quite right…
I typed in ‘Damien Thornes’ and this time it came up with 109,000 hits, but after the first page I gave up. There was a DAMIEN THORNE - Heavy Metal, Underground music, and a damien-thorne's Stuff but not what I was looking for.
I sat, resting my elbow on the table the computer was on, and my chin on my hand. I needed to think about my next step…May be a variation of Thornes?
I typed in ‘Variants of Thornes’ and it came up with 45,500 hits.
First it said: Did you mean: Variants of Thorns
Which is stupid because if I really meant that I would have typed it, you know?
So I ignored the stupid part and moved on, the first hyperlink was no use, so I clicked on the second. It said all I needed to know in the first line:
