Chapter 8: Home
For the rest of the way, Daman had finished off the story of how we’d ended up here, up to the point where I had been taken out to the noose to be hanged.
“So you see Abele, it really was my fault you ended up being killed. I was the one who had left you alone with The Righteous Warriors in the first place…” The gloominess had returned to Daman’s face and voice.
“No, you did the right thing. If you’d taken me with you The Righteous Warriors would have followed us until justice had been served. Because I had died, they’ll think partial justice has been served, and so leave us alone.” I sounded far more confident than I felt, but I was pretty sure The Righteous Warriors wouldn’t bother tracking us, they would just pray to God to have us struck down.
“Anyway, you haven’t told me how you swooped in and saved the damsel in distress.” I pestered, inquisitive.
“I just walked through the gates, head down, cloak hood up, and watched them bring you out…You nearly made me laugh at the faces of the people around me when you had glared at The Warriors and said, ‘How about you fuck off instead?’ And then when the black-dressed guy pulled the lever, I jumped into action – figuratively speaking.
“I raced forward, cut the rope keeping you attached to the platform, and ran away, holding you in my arms.
“When we arrived at the forest, I stopped, cut off the noose still around your neck and the hand bonds. Then, like I said earlier, I gave you the kiss of life or CPR, depending on what you want to call it.”
I stared at Daman, and mouthed wow.
“So now you’re up-to-date, and we’re here.”
I looked around, and saw several archways in the stone leading off into other rooms.
There was a couch sitting in the middle of the space randomly with a coffee table in front of it.
I frowned, confused as to how I could possibly see. Then I spotted the hole in the rocky ceiling, letting a small amount of light spill in.
“Do you sleep?” I asked, wondering if he had a bed or not.
“Yes. I am part human you know.”
I nodded my head, thinking back to the day in the school cafeteria when I hadn’t seen him eat anything.
“Eat?”
“Yeah.”
I saw a few cupboards over at the side of the cave now, containing food I guessed.
I led the way now tugging on Daman’s hand as the ravenous feeling returned with a vengeance.
I halted right in front of the cabinets.
“May I?” I asked, looking at Daman.
“This is your home too now.”
I grinned, let go of Daman’s hand, and then delved through the cupboards, finding crisps, cereals, biscuits, tins, and cans of beer, bottles of water, whisky, wine, and many other things.
When I had grabbed a packet of crisps (I couldn’t see what flavour they were), a bottle of water (I thought I’d better get well again first, before I started boozing) and a chocolate biscuit I turned to see no Daman in sight.
