Chapter 10: Vision
Bile rose up my throat, and poured out of my mouth, dribbling down my chin. I doubled over, coughing up more…but it was not sick, it was water.
A hand was rubbing my back…a voice soothing me.
When I had spluttered up all the contents of my lungs, I sucked in air, fighting for breath.
But I couldn’t suck enough oxygen in because I kept coughing every two seconds.
“That’s it, get it all out Ally.” An angelic voice alleviated me.
My head mechanically twirled round to face the voice, and my arms flung themselves around the body’s (that the voice belonged to) neck.
“Daman,” I heard a familiar voice gasp, half in relief, and half in shock, “Wh-what happened?”
Was the voice mine? It sounded…diverse somehow…
The arms of the man supported and embraced me at the same time.
“You cracked your head open against the side of the spring and died Almira…I suppose one good thing is that you haven’t lost your memory this time.”
Then I remembered, the red swirling blood, the burning in my lungs.
I reached a hesitant hand up to my head, but instead of my fingertips brushing my hair, I felt gauze. Daman had bandaged my head.
“I guess I have the best luck in the whole world.” I murmured, only partly sarcastic.
Daman’s eyes slid from mine, and he frowned.
“You must mean the worst.” I didn’t know whether he had meant me to hear that or not.
“No, the best, I keep being ‘resurrected’…Most people would have died and stayed dead after the first time. Never mind two deaths.”
“Most people,” He mimicked my words, “don’t have to be revived twice because they only die once.”
I could see where this conversation was heading fast, and I didn’t really want the mood to be dampened anymore by Daman trying to convince me to leave him. It just wasn’t going to happen. Not in this life. Or the next.
So I rolled my eyes and seized my clothes that were lying in a huddle near-by, then I began redressing.
Daman seemed to sense my sudden tension, and changed the focus of the tête-à-tête.
“Hey,” He glowered at me and at first I thought I’d done something wrong because he looked so serious, but then he spoke again, “Did I say you could put your clothes back on?”
Daman enclosed his arms around my waist and jerked me into his bare chest.
Then I gave in, overcome with the electricity that always came with his touch, I bound us even tighter together with my own arms.
“That’s not fair…You cheated.” I half-heartedly accused.
His chest rumbled underneath my head, and then I heard his trademark snigger.
I stretched myself up onto my tiptoes so I was as close to Daman’s mouth as I could be.
The snickering cut short, and then his lips were squeezed against mine. I was eager to encourage where the kiss was heading, and parted my lips so Daman could get his tongue into my mouth. He readily stuck his tongue right in there too.
