Last night, I think I ran over someone. by reddit user BlairDaniels  a.k.a  Blair Daniels Horror

“In 1000 feet, make a left on Forest Road.”

I swung left, glancing back at Ben. He stared blankly out the window, gripping tight his red toy car.

Please be okay, I thought. Please.

Just a few hours ago, he was fine. We’d had a normal day, normal bedtime. But then, around 2 AM, he woke up screaming. His temperature was almost 104*F.

So I pulled him out of the crib, packed him in the car, and started driving towards the nearest hospital. Stupid Maps put me on a road through the middle of the woods, which gave me even more anxiety.

“We’ll be there soon,” I reassured him.

I zoomed down the narrow road. Wayward branches stuck out into the road, scraping the car. Not a single pair of headlights passed me.

I hope this is the right road.

I turned back to Ben. I could practically feel the heat emanating off him. Filling the whole car. Suffocating us. What if he’s 104 by now? Or higher? I rolled down a window, letting the cold air in. What if we get lost out here? And he --

I turned back to the road.

I screamed.

Hit the brakes.

Thump.

The sickening sound reverberated through the car. What the hell was that? I took in a deep, shuddering breath. It was a deer. Just a deer.

But I knew it wasn’t.

My shaking hand fell on the door handle. I stepped out of the car.

The forest was silent, save for the soft ding ding ding of my car. Dark, save for my headlights. With a deep, shuddering breath, I turned around.

There was something lying in the middle of the road.

Several feet behind the car.

A wave of nausea filled me. I steadied myself against metal door, the same thought repeating in my head.

Drive.

But what if he needs help?

Drive.

No. I can’t. I forced myself to step forward, towards the mangled shape. My heart throbbed painfully in my chest. My vision swam. I made myself to crouch down, lean forward, and take a look.

What?

Glazed, lifeless eyes. Pale skin. Black hair. A face horribly flattened. White innards spilling onto the asphalt.

It wasn't a person.

It was a dummy.

I pinched it just to be sure. Cloth. White stuffing. Glass eyes. A badly drawn mouth. Thank God. I didn't hit someone.

I was so relieved, I didn’t think about how weird it was. That a dummy fell out of the woods. At exactly the same time I was driving by. On a deserted country road at 3 AM.

I didn't think about how weird it was until I got up and turned around.

Two figures were standing there. Right next to my car.

Trying to get Ben’s door open.

“No!” I screamed. I leapt forward. Yanked open the driver’s door, dove inside. Started the car. The engine roared underneath me. Ben began to wail.

Screech -- the pedal hit the floor.

When I glanced in my rearview mirror, I saw the two figures retreating into the woods.

We got to the ER ten minutes later. Ben turned out to be okay, thank God. Just a fever, that would pass with time. They gave him some ibuprofen and he went right to sleep.

When I reported the incident to the police, they told me several other people had experienced similar incidents on that road. Abandoned car seats by the side of the road, to lure people out. Hitchhikers. Teenage girls crying for help.

But they never found the two figures I saw that night.
