Mike's POV
I opened my eyes.
Where was I?
I looked around me. I was laying down in a bed, in a dark room. Jane was sleeping on a mattress on the floor.
I tried to sit up, and almost screamed in pain. I started to remember what happened. I had been shot in my shoulder, and I probably broke my leg when I fell from the hospital building. I remember that the soldier, Jonathan, followed me. I threw one of my knives at him to protect myself. I hated to hurt other people, but I had only hit him in the shoulder, so he would probably okay. I remembered running for what felt like hours, and passing out in an alley. Jane must have found me there, and taken me here.
Where were we? I hadn't slept in a real bed for ages. For how long had I been asleep?
"Jane" I whispered. She didn't move. "Jane, wake up!" I said, a bit louder. She moved in her sleep, and started to wake up.
"Mike! You're awake!" She sat up, and rubbed her sleepy eyes.
"Are you feeling okay?" She asked.
"I can barely move without dying of pain, but I guess I'm okay." I sighed. "Where are we?"
"I checked us in at a cheap motel. I though we needed a real place to stay for awhile."
I stared at her.
"Where did you get the money for that?"
"From the money we saved. It wasn't that expensive." She explained.
"What happened at the hospital? You never came to the bushes where I was waiting, so I had to use my powers to find you. I found you in an alley in the southern part of the slums. How did you even get there?"
I sighed.
"I got shoot in my shoulder when I was climbing down the building, and I think I might have broken my leg when I fell down. When I was trying to run away without anyone seeing me, a soldier caught me and I almost got killed. I had to throw one of my knives at him, so now I only have one left. But I only hit him in the shoulder, so he's probably okay. After that, I just ran and ran until I was sure there was no one behind me. I guess I ended up in that alley, and passed out."
"Did you get the medicine?" Jane asked.
"I couldn't find any. But I did find plague suppressing medicine. It's better than nothing I guess." I sighed.
"Yeah I guess so."
"But we do have a problem. Some of the soldiers knows what I look like now. The ones that caught me in the medicine room. We'll have to move around a lot so they won't find us that easy." I looked down at my leg. "I don't know if I can walk properly for awhile though. I think I broke my leg."
"I'll take a look at it and see what I can do." Jane said.
Jane was very talented when it came to healthcare. She'd probably be a great doctor if she wasn't homeless. Jane and I met 5 years ago, and we've been living in the streets together ever since then.
I haven't always been homeless. I used to live in a house with my family. It all started when I was 10 years old, and had to do my testing. I remember mom leaving me at the testing arena on my birthday, and that's the last time I spoke to her. The testing didn't feel that hard, and I actually thought that I would get good results. If you get over 1000 points, you get to go to a normal school. If you get over 1300 points, you get to go to the royal army school. Maximum points are 1500, and there's only one kid that has ever gotten that. Anyways, if you get under 1000 points, you have failed, and you get sent away to some training camp. At least, that's what they say, but that's not what happened to me. I failed, and got sent away, but not to a camp. I got sent to a lab, where they took weird tests on me. They took tests on other kids there too, and after the tests, the kids got gassed to death. I managed to escape before they killed me, and while I was escaping, I met Jane. She had gotten kidnapped when she was younger because she had "special abilities". She has telekinetic and psychokinetic powers. The scientists worked for the dictator and they were testing her because they wanted to use her as a weapon in the army. Thanks to Jane's powers, we managed to escape the lab. We've been doing everything together since that. She's like a sister to me.
I didn't come back to my parents. They still believe that I'm dead. It hurts, and I miss them every day, but it's safer that way. The people at the lab would find out if I lived with my family. I do check on them once a week, and my little sister Holly is sick. That's why I've been stealing medicine.
"Done. This was the best I could do since we don't have the right tools, but it'll work for now."
Jane had wrapped my leg with fabric from a t-shirt. She had somehow succeed to carefully take out the bullet in my shoulder, which hurt very much, and put disinfection in the wound.
"Jane, I want you to give the medicine to my family. I can't do it this time, since I can't walk. Just leave it outside the door. Please." I said.
She nodded. "I will. I can do it right now actually. Stay right here, and don't let anyone in."
I nodded, and gave her the medicine. She left.
