Mike's POV

"Mike! Mike wake up!" I heard Jane's voice, and I felt someone shaking me violently. I opened my eyes.

"Jane?" I rubbed my sleepy eyes, and sat up on the bench I had been sleeping on. I groaned, my back hurt from sleeping on the hard and uncomfortable surface, and my shoulder and my leg still hurt like hell after the night at the hospital. It was still dark outside.

"Mike, we have to go. Now." Jane dragged my arm and I stood up.

"What? Why?"

"Soldiers." She said. My eyes widened. Soldiers? Did they find us?

"Are they chasing after us?" I asked.

"I don't fucking know, wanna find out?" She grabbed my arm and started walking fast out of the dirty, abandoned alley. "C'mon, we have to hurry."

I rolled my eyes, and followed her.

We walked in a fast tempo down the small street between the almost ruined apartment buildings. People were drying clothes on lines tied up between the buildings and on the balconies. A lot of people lived on a small, shitty area. People were getting sick. People were starving. People were struggling to get water. Did the government care? Nope.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"To the northern side of the slums. Away from the soldiers" Jane said.

We wouldn't have been able to see anything in the dark if it wasn't for the few working street lights and the big billboards here and there. The billboards were about 30 feet high and they were placed all over the city, even in the slums. They showed the latest news, and every day at 11 AM, they played the national anthem. After the national anthem, every citizen had to say the national tribute to honor our dictator. Weird? Well, that's not the only thing we have to do. Every home in the Republic of America has to have at least one painting of our dictator hanging in the living room. That's kinda weird, right? And what happens if you don't have it? Well, they kill you. Haha. Fun. I don't get affected by this tho, since I don't have a home.

"Can we just... take a little break?" I said, after about 10 minutes of walking fast through the city.

Jane stopped, and looked at me confused.

"My leg hurts like hell." I said.

"Oh." She said. "Sure. We can take a break." She bent down to sit on the ground, with her back agains the house wall. I sat myself down next to her, wincing in pain.

"Are you okay?" She sounded worried.

I let out a small laugh and sighed.

"I'm fine. It's just my leg. It'll be all fine soon, I'll just give it some time to heal."

She sighed, and picked up something from the ground and played with it between her fingers.

"Yeah but that's what worries me. Your leg is broken, and a broken leg can heal, but it can't heal if you keep moving it. You walk and run and jump and climb and do basically everything that'll stop if from healing. It will only get worse." She said.

"Yeah but there's nothing I can do, if I don't move I'll get killed by the soldiers." I said.

"Yeah, I know. That's what's making me so frustrated." She paused, and threw the thing she was holding on the ground. "If we were rich, you'd get your leg fixed the same day you broke it. Your shoulder would be fixed and healed too. It wouldn't even be a big deal."

"Yeah." I sighed.

We were both quiet for a minute.

"If we were rich, a lot of things would be very different." I said. Jane smiled.

"If I was rich I would be a doctor. Maybe a surgeon." I smiled at the thought.

"You would make a great surgeon" I said. Jane laughed.

"What about you? What would you have been if you lived in the rich parts?" She asked.

I thought for a second.

"I don't know. I haven't thought about it before." I said. Jane hit my arm playfully.

"C'mon, if you had to chose one thing, what would it be?" She said.

"Maybe... I would've worked for the army? That's probably what would've suited me the most. But on the other hand, I hate the army. Maybe I could work for the army and secretly help the poor people? A double agent?" I laughed at the thought.

"You could've been a politician. You would make a great leader." Jane said.

"A leader? Like the dictator? Never." I hated the dictator with passion.

"No, not like the dictator. Like... a leader that actually cares about the people? You could've saved America, and rebuilt the army and changed the laws and everything." Jane said.

"Yeah, that would be pretty cool." I smiled.
"I would nominate you as the best doctor in the whole republic. You would've been super famous." I said. Jane smiled at me.

"I could make sure there were enough hospitals around the country. And the poor people would get free vaccination, just like the rich people. Oh, and we would've removed the testings. They're just unnecessary, everyone should get education. We could actually have saved this shitty country." Jane sighed.

"And we would've stopped all the wars. Maybe we would've removed the wall between us and the Colonies, and maybe we could be one big united country again." I added.

"Yeah. Imagine that." She laughed.

I sighed.

Suddenly, reality hit me like a truck.

"And here we are, sitting on the street in the middle of the night. Two homeless teenagers dreaming about ruling a whole country. Wow."

"We can always dream." Jane sighed.

All of sudden, she grabbed my hand and held it.

I looked at her and she looked me in the eyes.

She smiled, and I smiled back, flustered.
She looked down again.

Jane squeezed my hand, and I squeezed back.

We stayed like that, quiet and holding hands, for a couple of minutes.

None of us let go, none of us said anything.

"Are you ready to continue walking?" Jane asked after awhile.

"Oh, yeah. I'm ready." I said. I looked down at our interlocked hands. She did the same, and let go quickly. She stood up and brushed the dirt from her pants, without facing me. I did the same.

"Let's go." She said. Still not facing me.

We continued our walk down the streets, without saying a word.

What the fuck just happened?
