Mike's POV
"What the hell were you thinking? You could've gotten killed! When you knew that it was a trap, why would you go?" Jane was arguing with me for meeting up with this person even though I knew it was all a trap.
"Jane, my sister is dying! I need the medicine and yes, I'm willing to risk a lot for it, okay? I love her, and I can't loose her as I lost my dad."
"Mike, you haven't seen your family for years, they don't even know you're alive!"
"It's so I can keep them, myself and you safe! And all I want right now is for Holly to get well, okay? It doesn't matter if they think I'm dead if that's the only way I can save her!" We were waking down the empty, dark streets, it was around 2 am. We were looking for a place to stay the night.
"Fine! But next time, you tell me before you do something. And you should probably check so it's not poison or something in those pills. What if they're trying to kill you?" Jane said.
"Yeah, I will." I said.
We continued walking down the street in silence.
After about 30 minutes, we reached an alley with a couple of old trash containers, a broken, flickering street light and a bench.
"Should we stay the night here? Jane broke the silence.
"Yeah." I sighed. This was basically what my life looked like. Constantly running from the army, eating leftovers from trash cans outside restaurants and sleeping on benches. If I only had succeed my testing, I would've got to live with my family (even if they were poor, it was better than living on the streets). I would be going to school and getting education, so I would have a job in the future, probably as a soldier though, that's what most poor people get to work as. But it's better than this. And as if that wasn't enough, I was now the most wanted criminal in DC, even in the whole Republic. That's just such bullshit. There's so many people out there who's killing innocent people for nothing, and all I ever did was to steal medicine so my sister could survive, and steal other stuff so me and Jane could survive. The stuff I'm stealing is the stuff that the rich people can take for granted. In the rich parts, they get vaccinated every year for free. They get to live in skyscrapers with electricity and everything. They even get free education. And they probably believe in all that bullshit our dictator is saying too, because they don't know what it's like not being born into the elite.
This whole testing thing is also such bullshit.
They test you to see if you're good enough to go to school, but that's not exactly it. They have 2 separated testing arenas, one for the elite children and one for the poor children. All the rich kids gets education, even if their test results are bad. If they get high enough results they get to go to the army school. But it's different for the poor kids, they have to get a certain amount of points just to get to go to normal school. They only get to go to the army school if they get maximum points, which is 1500. That's literally impossible. Only one kid got that, ever. That kid was probably from the elite too. Well, good for him I guess. He doesn't need to worry about anything in his life. He probably goes to the royal army school, but he doesn't need to fight in the army. That's up to the soldiers. He gets to watch them, and give them orders. Because that's how it works. He gets to live his happy little life, oblivious of what's happening behind the skyscrapers. Oblivious of what's happening in the outside world. He gets to watch the news and believe all that stupid brainwash. He gets to see wanted articles on the news about me, and believe that I'm one of the worst persons in the Republic, when in reality, he's one of them.
I sighed, and started making myself comfortable on the small bench that I was sharing with Jane.
I fell asleep, oblivious of that this one boy that got 1500 points on his testing would change my life permanently.
In just a couple of days.
