Lydia's POV: "Salina!" I call as I ran under the falling ceiling. The falling flames. I look over my shoulder to find fog and a far away hidden shadow following.

I hear the sound of shouting from within the chaos behind me, but the words were easily drowned out by the crackling of wood as it continued to fall.... Continued to land so close to me. enclosing me in a long tunnel of heat that i fought both aching legs to run through.

I could hear my sister's voice. She was calling out to keep going... and don't stop... No matter what.

So I put everything I had with whatever strength I had left. And called out to my friend one last time.

"Salina!"

"I'm right here..." I let out a sigh of relief. I wanted to reach out to my friend, but I couldn't do that without slowing down.

"Lydia, we have to go faster!"

"I'm trying...!"

"Let me carry you..."

"Fuck no! I was sure I had vertigo twice when your brother carried me while running..." all those words took the breath out of me for a moment, But I still managed the strength to say them, even as the flames continue to fight through my lungs. I've been through this pain before. In Jade's flames only a week ago. So somehow my body knew what it was up against. Or maybe it was the magic coursing through me.

"Well, I'm not as fast as he is so maybe it won't make you feel as sick."

"These 'as' and 'maybes'.... aren't helpful."

"Stop talking. I'm doing it."

I start to speed up my pace before she could put a hand on me.

I can do this. I know I can. We were almost to the hall of bedrooms. And I had to search through them to find the others.

"Lydia...I hear someone! In here!" I was so focused on the door ahead- my parents bedroom, that I didn't notice the one we past. Salina was no longer running now, but standing in front of what once was a door, and was now a large hole. The door was ripped off its hinges, laying on its side where Salina stood. I do my best to dodge the falling wood- though I let out a wince at the close contact with the burning flames.

"Mom, Dad!' Salina starts crawling through, throwing everything in her way behind her. I stand closer to the hole to help her out. the hole was too small for Salina, but for me... it was a tight squeeze, but it was possible.

"I... I can get in there."

"Lydia, no."

"Do you want to save them or not?"

She nods but keeps going on tossing anything that seemed easy enough to hold on to. None of it was; She winced, and shook her hands with each piece of wood she clawed from the hole till her hands were bright and buffy.
Before i could reach out to stop her, Salina starts drawing a rune on her left hand and keeps going. Though this time she doesn't flinch or wince at the contact of anything she touches.

"What rune did you use?" I ask.

"The cooling rune. It cools anything you touch. Jade gave it to me.. Long story."

I gap at her.

"What? She gave you a rune? She's never gave me a rune before."

"Well, like I said. It's a long story. I'm almost done...."
