The warm sun beamed down on my face, and my outstretched hands reached for the sky. I jumped up and clicked my heels together, feeling as free as a bird flying south for the winter. I skipped over to my Chevy, let myself in and put the key in the ignition, and my car roared with approval.
"Thata girl!" I said as I patted the dash.
I threw my car into reverse, and then into drive. As I left that little strip-center, I shook my head. Why hadn't I done that sooner? Although I seem to remember a nail salon and not a spa. The sky was filled with an array of lavender and fuchsia in the horizon as the sun was setting. I knew that Pete would worry about me, but I didn't care. There was no way in hell I was going home to him or his stupid dog. I pressed my gas pedal into the floorboard, and my car hummed with the sound of speed as it buzzed down the road.
I turned the dial up on my radio, mouthing the words to my favorite song as I did ahead dance to the lyrics. I could see the red stop light from the distance, daring me to ignore it. As I pressed my foot against the gas pedal, a car to the left of me was keeping pace. The red Mustang hummed alongside me with the most gorgeous man I had ever laid eyes on. He had sandy blonde hair that fell around his angular face. He slid his sunglasses down his nose, and peered at me with icy blue eyes as he raised his eyebrows in a way that said 'let's go'.
"You're on!" I shouted.
As I sped through the stale, red light another car swerved away to miss hitting me, and the red mustang disappeared. As I looked back I could see he had stopped at the light. Soon, my rear-view mirror flashed with red and blue lights, and my ears were filled with the sound of a siren like an unwelcome wake-up call. The black and white car crept up behind me as if to kiss my bumper. The officer pointed his finger to the side of the road, gesturing for me to stop. As I turned the steering wheel, my car rolled into the nearby parking lot of a convenience store. A short, squatty man, with gray slicked back hair stepped out of the car. His stout legs waddled as he walked. My finger pressed down on the button of the door as I rolled the window down to meet the scowl on his face.
"License and registration," he said.
"I'm sorry. I know I ran the red light..." I started.
"License and registration!" he said again. This time his tone was elevated and commanding.
"Okay, okay....Let me just get my purse," I said as I unbuckled my seat-belt and turned around. My body was much easier to maneuver without the belly getting in the way. I folded my body over the driver's seat, allowing my butt to poke out in front of his face as I rummaged through my black hole of a purse, trying to find my wallet.
"M'am, I'm going to have to ask you to step out of the car," he said.
I spun my body around to look at him, and my eyes were as wide as frying pan lids.
"Why? What do you mean?" I asked.
"You think just because you're a nice looking woman I'm going to let you off the hook," he said.
"I beg your pardon?" I asked. He thought I was a nice looking woman? No man had said that to me in years. What was he talking about?
"Don't think I didn't notice you trying to show me your um.... assets..." he said with an eye-roll. "Now step out of the car!"
My hand grasped around the handle of the door as I gave it a reluctant push, and opened it. I stepped one foot on the ground and could see the red mustang had parked in front of the convenience store. He must have parked there when I wasn't looking because it caught me by surprise. Those beautiful blue eyes locked with mine for a single moment when he stepped out of the glass doors of the store, and got back into his car. I whipped my head away as my chin faced downward, swinging my silky locks of chestnut hair around my face.
