"I'm over here. You know?" I asked.
His head whipped to the side, looking at me with his piercing blue eyes, and it gave my heart quite the rattle. I could feel my gut clenching with a mixture of anxiety and anticipation as I sucked in my bottom lip, and bit it--hard. My nails drummed on the wooden top of the bar, and I could feel a drop of sweat gliding down my temple.
"Yea, I know,"he smirked.
We held a gaze in a bit of uncomfortable silence as my nerves twisted like a pretzel.
"I don't want to talk about yard work," I blurted.
"Okay... you dance?" he asked as the music switched from an upbeat, country line dance to a slow romantic song.
"Uh... no," I said as I clasped my sweaty palms together, and jammed them between my thighs.
"Come on Ash...I'll teach you."
His blue eyes twinkled as he smiled, melting my heart into goo. Ash. Pete used to call me that while were dating. I remember his clumsy hands trying to pull me in for a kiss after our second date. He missed and hit my nose instead, but for whatever reason, I thought it was the cutest thing I'd ever experienced. It was like Pete and I were in our own little romantic comedy. He'd bring me flowers after I'd spent all night studying for exams just to make me feel better. Then it was 'Ash this' and 'Ash that.' Now, all Pete could say was 'babe can you get me a (insert Pete's desire).' I sighed as I reminisced. How could I resist Justin? Not only were his dazzling eyes capturing a tiny piece of my heart one moment at a time, but he called me Ash.
"No... Justin...No!" I resisted as he helped me to my feet.
"Come on Ash! Come on!" He said it again. Ash. I had to go.
My heavy feet of concrete moved across the floor, and with each step, I became a bit closer to my inevitable embarrassment. Even the bottom feeders would think I was making a fool of myself. Justin tugged on me before swooping his large arm around my now tiny waist. I could feel my body flush with his, as his arms embraced me, and it was riveting, yet terrifying. My heart was beating out of my chest, and I hadn't felt this way in years.
I rested my dainty hand inside of his as I looked down at the wooden dance floor. My clumsy feet moved in a sporadic pattern, as they fought to stay instep with his. However, his would go in one direction and mine would go in another. The connection between my brain and limbs must have been defective.
"One, two. One,"he whispered, as his soft, puffy lips pressed against my earlobe.
I couldn't quite get it, yet his graceful feet were gliding as if they'd never had a bad day. He brushed my brown, silken hair from my face as his blue eyes peered into mine. I felt his strong arm giving my waist a tight squeeze, and there was a jolt of electricity that twinged through my veins, giving my heart a flutter. He was a real man, a man who could dance. The way he made me feel was sinful, yet I couldn't quite get enough.
"Just follow me,"he said.
One, two. One. I told myself. I closed my eyes, relishing in his affection. His hot breath warmed my neck as he swooped me across the dance floor. The bottom feeders leaned forward to observe us. My feet became as light as the air we breathe. I could feel the rhythm of my step coming into sync with his.
