I sat staring at the fire, watching the flames lick the open air. My mind kept playing through the events of Murphy's banishment and I sighed. Bellamy emerged from his tent and walked over to join me by the fire. I gave him a sideways glance and stared back at the fire.
"Hey," he murmured as he sat next to me. When I didn't answer he continued. "Look, I'm sorry about Murphy and not supporting you and all that. I don't know if he was your friend or more or..."
"If you were suggesting that we were together then you are wrong," I said quietly, not looking at him. "He was my friend. He understood me."
"I understand you, Lay," he said, nudging me with his shoulder.
"You don't even know me that well, Bellamy," I told him, finally meeting his gaze. "All you know is my story but that's not me."
"I know that you aren't a murderer." Bellamy blinked. "You helped me be reunited with my sister. You have a good heart."
"I helped you kill someone." I breathed. "I gave you the idea. That does make me a murderer."
Bellamy grabbed my chin and forced me to look him in the eyes. "I could have said no. That was my doing and not yours."
"Bellamy," I whispered. "If the rest of the Ark comes down, then we can't stay here. You know that."
"Then we will run," he answered. "Just me and you."
"What about Octavia?" I asked.
"She'd be safer with the others." He stared into the fire. "I'd leave her here."
I sighed. "What are we going to do, Bell?"
He put his arm around me and pulled me closer to him. I laid my head on his shoulder and breathed in his sweet scent.
"Don't worry about anything, Layla," he told me. "I will make sure that no one will find out or hurt you."
"Clarke knows." I shook my head. "I made her swear not to tell, but she has a big mouth."
"If Clarke says anything then it will be the last thing she says."
Suddenly I stiffened and sat up, pulling away from Bellamy as my eyes locked on the sky. He looked confused but then followed my gaze and gasped. A bright light was streaking across the sky, seeming to come closer as it intensified. We both stood up as it flew overhead and continued falling somewhere in the distance. We waited briefly and then heard the faint rumble of a crash.
"Shit," I hissed and looked to Bellamy as others around camp started gathering. I followed him at the largest group, headed by Octavia.
"If it cleared the ridge than it's probably near the lake," someone said and others muttered in agreement.
Octavia looked at Bellamy as we approached. "We should get moving. Everyone's ready."
Bellamy shook his head. "No one's going anywhere. Not while it's dark it isn't safe. We'll head out at first light. Pass the word."
Octavia jumped in front of her brother in protest. "Everyone for a hundred miles saw this thing come down. What if the grounders get to it first? Bell, we should go now."
"I said we wait till sunrise," Bellamy said firmly before nodding at me to follow him into his tent.
I gave Octavia a sympathetic glance before following him inside.
"Let me guess," I said quietly as Bellamy gathered some things into his pack. "We are going?"
He nodded and handed me a knife and his axe. "Arm yourself. We don't know what could be out there."
