I sat at my kitchen table, a bottle of bottom shelf whiskey sitting in front of me half empty. The vet had left a while ago, but Alastor stayed. The deer demon sat opposite of me, peering at my slumped form.
"The vet said Trigger was okay." Alastor consoled, a little awkwardly.
Sitting up, I poured myself another glass, offered him some, and when he declined, I set it back down, stating, "And that's a blessing. But I want to know who decided to poison one of my best Night Mares." We lapsed back into silence for a long moment before either one of us spoke again.
Alastor was the first to do so, "Do you have any enemies?" I shook my head in reply. No. No enemies. I was generally liked by those around me. I kept to myself and didn't cheat at cards the handful of times I had played. Wracking my brains, I downed my whiskey. Who in the hell would want to poison Misty and hurt my ranch? Unless...
"There was a man," I said thoughtfully, "It was a few months ago, but a banker sort came out wanting to buy my ranch. I turned him down and he seemed pissed about it." Alastor cocked his head, considering my words.
"You think he might be the one who poisoned Misty?" He asked.
"Not personally," I admitted, "but I think he hired someone." Alastor got a curious look on his face, then stood up. I watched him as he slipped into his suit jacket.
"I'll be back in the morning," He said, taking the whiskey bottle and setting it up out of reach, "I suggest you get some sleep." That said, Alastor gave me a nod, and slipped out the front door to his waiting town car. I watched him go, then sighing, I stood up and shuffled back to my small bedroom. Flopping down on the still made bed, I closed my eyes and fell into a half drunken slumber.
