Late that evening, I sat on the porch, gazing out at the fields as I sipped at my second beer of the night. Several Night Mares were still out grazing in the twilight, long tails flicking flies away. As I watched them, I thought about Alastor's visit.
He wasn't like any other man I was used to. When I was alive, the men I was around were all miners and cow hands. And down here in Hell...well...besides the bar flies and the local vet, I didn't associate much with anyone. Alastor, on the other hand, was refined and polished.
Just as I was finishing the dregs of my beer when the phone rang. Sighing, I heaved myself to my feet and went inside. Grabbing the receiver off the wall, I answered it.
"Hello?" I asked, leaning against the wall, phone in one hand and empty beer bottle in the other.
"Good evening, Miss (Y/N)," Alastor's voice replied, "I do apologize for calling so late. I was wanting to ask if you would mind going to dinner with me tomorrow night?"
I smiled like a damn idiot as I said, "That would be nice. Seven sound alright? I have to get the chores done beforehand."
"Perfect." Alastor's voice said approvingly, "I'll pick you up at seven. Have a good night, my dear."
"Good night." I replied, then hung up the phone. As soon as the phone was back on the wall, I started laughing. This was going to be an interesting date. The gentleman and the soiled dove, out for a night on the town.
