Katie Killjoy's Report

It was on the news the very next morning. Katie Killjoy, the overly perky yet bitchy news anchor, smiled as she spoke into the camera. 

Some unknown assailant had attacked the largest cattle rancher in Hell. Carl Bennington was offering a handsome reward for anyone with information on who killed nearly three hundred of his cattle. Apparently, they had poisoned the grain sometime between last night and this morning. 

I chuckled dryly into my cup of coffee. While I felt terrible about killing so many cattle, I felt no pity for their owner. Turn about was only fair. Alastor sat next to me wordlessly, watching the TV. 

"Think they know it was us?" I finally broke the silence, getting up to refill my cup. 

"Bennington is a smart man," He replied, leaning back in his chair, "I'm sure he has a hunch. He's probably just buying time or playing dumb. One or the other." I mulled over his words. Bennington could have messed with any number of people. Would he suspect one of them, or just me?

Sighing in exasperation, I set my cup to the side, "I can't stand this waiting game. It's like we're waiting to see where he fires the first bullet." Alastor watched as I began to pace back and forth for a few minutes. As I passed by him, he reached out and took hold of my wrist, stopping me in my tracks. 

"Let him get sloppy and stupid." Alastor said, his red gaze staring into my own. He stood to where we were only mere inches apart, his whisper resounding in my ears, "I helped you get into this, I will help you get out of it. Trust me on that." 

Somewhat calmed, I leaned against his chest, wrapping my arms around his waist. Alastor's own arms encompassed me in response, holding me tight to him. We stayed like that for a long while, savoring the peaceful quiet that was bound to shatter at any moment.
