Nature's greatest gift to mankind,
as well as our most useful tool.
One that gives us an advantage over animals,
and made us the most powerful animal on earth. What is a tree?
Animals don't think much of them,
but thoughts let us break things down,
and so, we can use them for a greater purpose. We break trees down into parts,
turn them into different tools,
use them to build our homes,
and slice them into paper:
something that we use for the written word,
and something this poem could not exist without. It's not that animals cannot think,
it's that we can so much more.
Just like a dog has a more sensitive nose,
we have a more sensitive brain.
We are able to pick up thoughts,
a dog cannot sense.Your brain creates a world of senses,
and your thoughts separate it into parts.
Thoughts use words and symbols,
which we use to understand our world.
Even the thoughts you're using to read these words,
are a part of that process.
Knowledge is our survival instinct.
We use it to understand our place. You may have thoughts on many things,
even on things you barely understand,
or on people you barely know.
This is completely normal.
We use our knowledge to survive,
and when we understand the world around us,
we feel completely safe. But there are some nagging questions,
that we can have trouble to crack.
Like what is life, love, or beauty?
We often struggle to put them into words. How can it be:
we can put a man on the moon,
but cannot answer these simple questions?
Most who try, leave others unsatisfied,
and there's no scientific way to test them either.Perhaps nature's greatest gift,
has some limitations.
Even if a dog can smell far,
are there smells beyond its scent?
Even if we think much,
is there knowledge beyond our thoughts?Life, love, beauty:
we can describe them through words,
but words only point,
to something we can only know much deeper.
It is where you and the dog are equal,
and so, you can join with the dog together. What words could compare,
to the beauty of a tree in the wind.
It blows gracefully but ever still,
leaves colored in the autumn breeze.Even through the words,
something speaks between the gaps,
from a source that cannot be uttered. What words could compare...
