At the Google headquarters, Mr. Chetty was hard at work with his employers as they went through hundreds of applications to decide who would be getting an internship at Google.
"Who is our next applicant?" Mr. Chetty asked as an employer brought up the next applicant up on the monitor.
"Ah, the Yale girl," Mr. Chetty exclaimed as he looked at the picture of Veronica Campbell. "So what do we think?" he looked around the room. "Dana?"
"She's amazing. She took every Computer Science class that Yale offers. She's even at the top of her class right now. I say yes." Dana said.
"Eleanor?"
"Hmm. She seems like a really nice girl. Plus she does have an amazing background on everything that we do here. I say yes."
"Okay! She's in," Mr. Chetty clapped his hands. "Moving on. Who is our next applicant?" he watched the slide change and now a picture showed up of Billy and Nick. "Ah, our two daiquiri men. So what do we think? Dana?"
"You're kidding right?" she chuckled before answering. "No."
"Eleanor?"
"Hmm. They seem like really nice guys, but I don't think so."
"Okay! Moving on."
"Can I say something?" Lyle asked, speaking up for the first time during the meeting.
"You can. We will resent you for wasting our time, but don't let that stop you."
"It's just...diversity is in our DNA, right?" Lyle asked as everyone nodded. "I thought the goal was to find people with a different way of thinking."
"That doesn't mean we have to hire them." "Very good point, Dana. Moving on!"
"You read their resumes, right?" Lyle asked Mr. Chetty and he nodded. They have more years...of sales and life experience than the age of most of our interns. Plus, our final judgement is always based on the Layover Test. Who would you rather sit with at an airport bar for a jump higher? Duh. Or the out-of-the-box thinkers who turned being stuck in a blender into an advantage."
Mr. Chetty stared at Lyle.
Lyle was beyond nervous that Mr. Chetty was going to yell at him in front of everyone but what he did next...surprised him.
Mr. Chetty voted 'yes' on Billy and Nick.
