Veronica woke up with a smile on her face when she realized that today would be her first day of her internship at Google. She threw the covers to the side and made her way to the bathroom to get ready for the day.
After taking a shower and changing into a fresh pair of clothes, she grabbed her bag that held her Mac, notebook and writing utensils just in case it was necessary.
She then left her apartment and took a cab downtown, that soon dropped her off at the Google building. She payed the driver before stepping out as she gripped the strap of her bag, before the cab drove away. Veronica looked up at the Google building in awe.
She was finally here.
Veronica started walking forward, looking around at the people that were conversing and smiling outside. She walked into the building and got her ID from a staff member. She placed the lanyard around her neck that held a card that said her name on it.
Veronica then made her way to the hall where the meeting was being held and she walked down the steps before being stopped by a young man who had black curly hair and wore glasses.
"Hello!" he greeted her. "Welcome to Google."
Veronica smiled. "Hello," she greeted back.
"Here's your Google hat," the man said as he handed her a colorful hat that had a propeller on the top. Veronica eyed the hat, it looked like a child would wear this. She looked back up at the man. "Do I really have to wear this?"
The man scoffed. "Of course! Every intern must wear this hat. It is a part of the experience here at Google after all." Veronica sighed before placing the hat on.
"Now that's the spirit!" the man cheered and Veronica laughed quietly. "The name is Lyle," he held his hand out. Veronica shook his hand. "My name is Veronica Campbell."
"Nice to meet you Veronica," Lyle said with an enthusiastic smile on his face. The two let go off each other's hand. Lyle turned his head toward the bottom of the steps before turning back to Veronica. "The presentation is about to start. I got to go. Take any seat you want," he said before walking down the steps.
Veronica made her way toward the middle of the room and sat down on one of the rows. She placed her bag down by her feet and observed the room. She saw that everyone began to sit down as well before the presentation started.
"My name is Roger Chetty," a man introduced himself into the microphone to the interns. "I am head of the Google Intern Program," he paused. "Welcome to Google. This will not be your average internship. Oh, no. You will do what we do. And we will watch how well you do it. You represent the finest schools. Your intelligence and achievement is well noted. But to excel at this internship, you're going to need far more than brain power."
Veronica listened intently.
"What you're going to need...is Googliness." Mr. Chetty said, making several interns laugh. Veronica smiled and let a small laugh out.
"Nothing funny," he said, making the laughter stop. "Googliness," he said seriously. "The intangible stuff that made a search engine into an engine for change. Now, you will be divided into teams and by the end of the summer only one team will be guaranteed a full-time position. the other 94% of you will not. You have been split up into several seminars to acquaint you with our campus and culture. Descriptions have been emailed to you."
Every intern then took out their phones to see which seminars they were in. Veronica saw that she had a workplace seminar first, where she would be told the rules of the Google industry.
