Everything was groggy to Jisoo, like in a dream or underwater, and the only thing anchoring her to reality was the wrist she was weakly holding on to with as much effort as possible. The wrist that wore a familiar rose-gold bracelet with a diamond star.
The sight was surely a bonus on top of the sheer relief that Jisoo felt after narrowly stopping Jennie from spilling any more of last night's events to Joohee. With Jiyong's press conference just a day away, the last thing Jisoo wanted was to anger Joohee out of their deal at the last minute and jeopardize Jennie's safety. She still could not believe Jennie was here, that Jennie actually stayed to care for her throughout the night when all Jisoo did was hurt her, and this only reaffirmed Jisoo's conviction to keep Jennie safe from any more harm.
Not ten seconds later, the doctor and her team of nurses rushed in to examine Jisoo's vitals and test her responses, and Jisoo instantly felt the loss of warmth when Jennie had been ushered away from her touch. Joohee stood by the side giving thankful prayers aloud while Jennie watched like a nervous hawk ready to pounce on the doctor if she was checking anything less than thoroughly.
When all checks had been done, the doctor and her nurses gathered at the foot of the bed writing notes while Jennie and Joohee took a side of the bed each, flanking Jisoo in the middle. The nurses had removed Jisoo's oxygen mask and adjusted the head of the bed to an angle so that Jisoo was propped up.
"She's great, a strong fighter this one," Dr. Jung teased and Jisoo chuckled meekly. "But her body is still a little lethargic. Let's keep her under observation here for two more nights."
Jisoo's eyes widened and she forced out a scratchy voice from her parched throat, "No..."
"No!" There was an outburst of protest from Joohee at the same time, surprising everyone in the room as all eyes flitted between Joohee and Jisoo.
Clearing her throat awkwardly, Joohee plastered on a smile and spoke with a little whine, "I mean, Dr. Jung, can't Jisoo be discharged sooner? We have an important event to attend tomorrow night." And Jisoo found herself agreeing with Joohee for the first time, although for a very different reason – the way Jisoo saw it was that as soon as they got the announcement over and done with, Jennie would be safe.
Dr. Jung frowned disapprovingly, "We need to observe her condition, Joohee, just in case she shows negative symptoms. Her body is weak and susceptible now." Jisoo glanced discreetly at Jennie and found her silently furrowing her brows and nodding along to the doctor's words, and Jisoo smiled at the bed with a sorry ache in her heart.
"Umm... Dr. Jung," Jisoo's voice was airy and hoarse, "how about I promise to come back here if I really don't feel well? Please? Joohee's right, the event's very important." To me personally.
From the corner of her eyes, Jisoo caught Jennie shake her head and roll her eyes to look out the window. The expression seemed to be a mix of exasperation and disappointment, and Jisoo wished she could explain herself, but she could not, not right now.
Dr. Jung sighed, "Oh, alright... you can go tomorrow afternoon, and have your important date. But no physical exertion, no alcohol, and definitely no partying." At that, Joohee squealed and gave Dr. Jung a big hug, giggling and chattering as she saw them out of the ward, while Jennie remained stoic with her eyes out the window.
Seeing that Joohee was preoccupied, Jisoo lightly tugged Jennie's pinky and then grazed Jennie's fingertips with her own, asking for the brunette's attention or better yet, a hand-hold. Jisoo gave her sweetest smile with her best rendition of pleading puppy eyes, awaiting Jennie to turn around and swoon and give in and take her hand.
But instead, Jennie pulled back and crossed her arms, pursing her lips and casting her gaze to the ground. It was not hard for Jisoo to recognize that stance, that Jennie was not pleased. At all.
