Jennie had returned to the dorm to find Lisa out for the night. It was Friday after all, but Jennie had no desire to socialize with anyone – she needed to get some sleep before heading to San Francisco like she had been doing every weekend for the past nearly 100 days.
To say the least, it had been a very rough month. With her mother falling ill intermittently due to bad weather, Jennie had to cover several night shifts at the hotel, on top of her own dance instruction at the academy that she used to teach part-time during weekends but had shifted to weekday nights ever since Jisoo left. Deadlines for school assignments were congregated around this time too, not to mention examinations that were just round the corner. And dance season had only just wrapped up, with her team successfully defending their championship title through hours and hours of long training. Plus, each weekend was dedicated to finding Jisoo across the country.
It was insane, almost superhuman, and from the outside, she was juggling everything perfectly, but Jennie could feel the mounting effect of sleep deprivation like a sack of rice over her shoulder, taking its toll on her strength and concentration. And tonight, her faith in Jisoo.
It had been three grueling months with nothing but silence from the raven, and tonight, Jennie was finally exhausted to the bone. The cracks in her perseverance were spreading within her heart, and she was not sure if Jisoo even cared anymore.
Sinking to the floor and hugging her knees, Jennie broke down and began to cry.
This was one of those nights when the raven's absence was too much to bear. But unlike those nights, this was going to be the last straw.
She made up her mind as her fingers typed unsteadily on her phone.
"Jisoo, I surrender. I'm letting you go.
Live well, I love you."
Sometimes the best way to love was to let go, despite the gaping hole it would leave in the broken heart.
----------
Settling into one of the front row seats with her cane, Jisoo heard the announcement over the speakers reminding all passengers to switch off their mobile devices. She reached into her pocket, and then another, and another, only to realize that she had really left her phone at home. But it was too late, the plane was about to take off.
Oh well.
Jisoo did not think it mattered much to forget her phone though, as she smiled excitedly to herself at the thought of the roses in her carry-on luggage safely stowed in the compartment above.
----------
It was 630am but Jennie was in no mood to run. Her eyes were puffy and her limbs felt as heavy as lead.
She checked her phone with a tiny bit of hope left in her that was instantly put out once she saw that there was not a single text from Jisoo.
She scoffed bitterly at her foolish self. What was she expecting, really? A fairytale?
It was time to wake up from this wishful thinking.
While there was nothing from the raven, there was however a text message from a senior she knew. Despite Jennie's constant rejections, he had not given up in asking her out every now and then. He was a nice guy and she had nothing to nitpick about him; it was just a shame for him that she did not have the slightest romantic feelings for him, and she used to think she never would, until today.
Maybe things will be different for a change. Maybe sparks will fly somehow.
For the first time, she replied 'okay' instead of 'no, thanks' to his message.
