Chapter Four

Ponyboy's POV:

As soon as we got home, Sodapop went into the bedroom and Darry sat at the table doing his homework. I couldn't decide who I wanted to be with, but I really wanted to see Johnny again. Maybe I could figure out where he lived? Mom and Dad would be mad though. I sighed, deciding to go see Sodapop. I was really tired, my head was sore. I opened the door quietly, in case Sodapop was asleep. He was laying on the bed, but his eyes were open. Crawling into bed next to him, I closed my eyes, breathing him in. He murmured, "Tired Pony?" I nodded, "Mmmm, yeah...." I never was this tired after school, but I was enjoying being with Sodapop. I snuggled against his chest as he rubbed my head. My eyes burned, and I let sleep come.

Sodapop's POV:

Ponyboy's breathing evened out, but I didn't stop stroking his hair. I loved him so much, he was my baby brother. He was still small, and I wanted to be there for him. I sighed. I was still mad at Steve, but I wouldn't let him get to me. I closed my eyes, and I must've fallen asleep, because Dad was shaking me, "Pepsi-Cola, c'mon, it's time for dinner." I yawned as Ponyboy stirred beside me. Dad rubbed my hair, "C'mon, little buddy, it's time for supper." I grinned, jumping out of bed and running into the kitchen. "What's for supper?" Mom was sliding a pan from the oven, man, did it smell good! She smiled, "Baked chicken, I thought you'd enjoy it." I grinned, sliding into my chair to eat. Darry slid in too, glancing across the table at me. I opened my mouth to ask what was so interesting when Dad yelled from the other room, "Honey, can you come here for a moment?" Mom wiped her hands on her apron, walking into the the other room. After a few minutes, she came back in, "Boys, Ponyboy is sick, I'm going to have to run to the store for some medicine. Your father will take care of you. Please be good." She kissed Darry and I on the cheek as Dad came in, dishing out the food. Mom's food was normally great, but all it tasted like to me was grape medicine.

After dinner Darry and I finished the homework we had, we decided to watch some cartoons before bed. I was scared for Ponyboy, he was still a little kid, what if he was really sick? Darry isn't good at reading people, and it was weird when he slung his arm around me, drawing me close. I decided pretty fast that I like weird, and I was able to relax for the first time in hours.
