One Step Closer to Gone: Amber

Chapter 2

        I guess I started off at an odd place.

        My name is Amber Miller. Josh, Marli, Tyler, Minzy, and I have been best friends since forever it seems like.

        Marli introduced Minzy and me to Tyler and Josh. Minzy and Tyler instantly became best buddies, while Josh and I talked about music and other things we had in common.

        I told him that when I was in 4th grade, I wrote a song and was teased about it for years after I sang it for my music class. I then told him that I had kept writing songs, but I never persued my dream because I was made fun of. I didn't want that to happen again.

        After I was finished explaining that to him, he clenched his fists and grit his teeth.

        "Well you know what? Those... Those... They can go get lives instead of tearing people down because of something they love! Amber, don't let people say things that make you quit on your dreams. If you love what you do, do it!" Josh's anger slowly cooled to a comforting contentment.

        I laughed. "Wow, Josh! I didn't know you'd get so mad about that. We hardly know each other! Why so upset about my life?"

        "I'm sorry. It's just, I like writing songs too," My eyes widened. "I get really mad when people who have the same dream as me get put down," he explained.

        "Oh, that's okay! You like writing songs, too?" I wondered.

        "Yeah. Actually, I'm writing one right now." said Josh.

        "Awesome! I am too! It's about someone I know... A guy to be specific..." I blushed, thinking I may have said too much.

        "Oh, that's cool! Mine's about a girl... who hides her feelings." he smiled.

        Anyway, going back to introductions. Josh is 15. Tyler and Marli are 14. Minzy and I are both 13. We're all at the same boarding school: Seneca Creek Prep. It's for middle school and high school students with special talents. We're all in the same music department, I'm also in the drama department, the other four are in the art department.

        Tyler and Josh have been close for a long time. Tyler's birthday is the day after mine, so when I turn 14 this year, he'll turn 15 the next day. Did I mention that Tyler has a twin brother? His name is Isaiah, but I'll get to him later. Josh turned 15 in February. Tyler and I were born in December. Minzy's birthday is in Augus,t and Marli's is in April.

        Minzy and Tyler aren''t exactly living the "perfect life", but then again, nobody's life is going to be absolutely flawless. Minzy actaully has a cutting problem. I've known about it for a while. She worries me, and she knows that. But even though she doesn't have a wonderful life, I'm not afraind to approach her. Minzy and I are practically sisters. I call her my sister. She calls me her sister.

        We are sisters. Maybe not by blood, but we are connected from the heart.

        Life wouldn't be the same without her.
