I sat in the living room staring at the black egg in the glass case. I could've sworn it was moving. It may have been my imagination, but who knows.
"Sytre. Stop sitting around and start cleaning up." my sister walked past me and bopped me on the head.
"Hey! Just because you're 20 months older than me doesn't mean that you can boss me around!" I yelled back at her.
I saw my mom's silvery hair out of the corner of my eye. "Yes it does." she responded as she walked into the kitchen.
I rolled my eyes and got up. As soon as I did our black dog, Draco, jumped up onto me. I fell back onto the couch and tried to push him away. Hydrinn pushed him off of me and hit me upside the head.
"I told you to help! If mom sees you lying around she's not going to be happy." she whispered. "Okay, okay." I sighed.
I sat up and stretched. I looked down at my necklace and held the Ender Pearl strung onto it in my hand. I could feel my bangs falling over my eyes so I flipped my pitch-black wispy hair. My bangs came back into view. This time I blew them away, but they came back.
I got up and walked over to the door. I opened it and leaned up against the side of the doorway. I looked out at the dark oak forest in the backyard. I wonder what it's like to go on an adventure...I thought.
"Sid!" yelled Hydrinn. I turned around. "Stop calling me that!" I swiped at her. I looked up to see my mom rather than my sister. "I'm sorry. I thought you were-" I stopped when I felt her hand in my hair.
"My, you look like your father when he was younger." she smiled. "Except for your teal eyes."
"Speaking of dad, when is he coming home?" I asked.
"He'll be home soon." she replied.
"Why can't I go to the End with him? Hydrinn get's to go with you when you go." I sulked.
"Well, your father's job is much more dangerous than mine." she leaned up against the doorway.
"No it's not. He just walks around the End and looks around for danger. That's not dangerous at all." I looked down. I could tell that she felt discouraged.
"How about I take you with me the next time I go to check on the kingdom. Hm?" she smiled.
"Sure." I returned her smile.
"Now come on! Dinner's not going to cook itself."
I walked inside and helped cook spaghetti. As I did, I recalled the stories my mom had told me when I was younger. She told us about the prophecy and the battle with the Ender Dragon. I looked over at the egg. That's all that's left of the horrible beast. Only that egg.
My mom is queen of the End, which makes my dad the king. He's also the head of the royal guard, which gives him a bigger responsibility than my mom.
You may be asking 'Why don't you live in the castle?'. Well, we do, but we don't. We live here, in the Mainland, but we visit the End often. I vaguely remember living in the castle. I was only two when we left. Ten years later and we still do the same thing: Back and forth and back again.
I must say that I enjoy the End. I like the people there. There's barely anyone here, so it gets lonely. I'd rather live in the End.
I felt soft fur rub up against my leg. I looked down and picked up our calico kitten, Salic. I held her in my left arm as I stirred the spaghetti.
"Don't get cat hair in my pasta!" yelled Hydrinn as she grabbed Salic out of my hand.
"I wont! She wanted to be held." I stared into Hydrinn's bright lavender eyes. "Y'know what? Since I'm doing it all wrong, how about you do it!" I shoved the spoon at her and walked outside.
I stomp over to the corral and get on top of my dad's horse, Nazra. I kicked my heels on her sleek black flank and we went soaring off into the feild.
I could feel the tingly feeling in my hands and my head was buzzing.
"Don't let it take over." I whispered to myself. I took a deep breath and felt the anger flow out of me. I opened my eyes and looked out at the lake in front of me.
I'm a bit hot-headed. I can't quite control my anger like my sister can. I guess I'm like my mom on that one. I've never gone full Ender before and I'm not looking forward to it ever happening.
I could hear hoofbeats behind me and saw my mom on Pitch. "Sytre. What's wrong?" she asked.
"Nothing, mom." I looked back at the glimmering water. She got off of Pitch and walked up to me.
"If you don't want me here, that's fine." she reached out to touch my back. I turned around.
"Why do I turn into this monster?" I asked. She looked up into my eyes.
"I used to ask the same thing." she sat down onto the grass.
I got off of Nazra and sat in the grass with her. "We're not so different, you and I." she sighed.
"Well, duh! We're related." I laughed. I saw her smile as the light from the water rippled off of her face. "I want to be like you." I set my chin on my knees. She turned to me.
"No," she paused and looked away. "You don't want to be like me." she whispered.
"Why not?" I threw my arms up. "You're the Queen of the End! You rule an entire nation!" I fell back onto the grass.
"Yes, that is true," she moved my bangs out of my face. "But it's not all sugar, spice, and everything nice. Trust me. You don't want to be anything like me." she smiled a little.
"We'd better go home. Dad will be home soon." she tassled my hair and got up.
I watched her as she rode off to the house on Pitch. I stood next to Nazra as she grazed. "Why wouldn't want to be like her?" I whispered.
Do you think he's the one?
Oh yes. He'll do.
