Something Right

We trotted along for what seemed like hours. There was nothing left of the world except for plains. The house was no longer visible.

A horrible thought crossed my mind. What if we can't get back? How will we get back? What if we never come back?

"Sid." Hydrinn's voice threw off my train of thought. "What?" I sighed. "Which way, genius?" she snapped.

I looked around confused. Hydrinn sighed in annoyance. "Since you're the one 'in charge', you obviously know where we're going." she scoffed. "Now, which way?" she raised her voice.

"Uh..." I looked around.

"Didn't really think things through, did you?" she smirked. "You know, you try to act all smart and make fast decisions, but you never take much thought into thinking them through. Do you?" she sassed.

I glared at her. "That's what I thought." she snapped her head forward, whipping her hair in my face.

"West."

"What?"

"Did I stutter? I said go west." there was an edge of annoyance to my stern tone.

"Alright, genius," she responded. "But when we get lost don't blame it on me because you were the one who said we should go west." her lavender eyes burned with some strange emotion that I couldn't pick out. It was almost anger, but it had a tinge if fear to it.

The dragon made a clicking sound with his throat.  I looked down at the small black reptilian figure.  His blue eyes flicked over the horizon, observing the changing scenery as we moved along.

It's strange, really.  He's only been in this world for less than a day and it seems like he's roamed the land for thousands of years.  He's not trying to figure out what everything is.  He knows.  There's only one thing that he can't figure out: Me.

I started moving my finger towards him in hopes to touch him.  His eyes widened and he arched his neck.  I slowly started moving it closer.  His head moved farther away from it as it approached him.  I was close enough to touch his muzzle, but I waited for him to come to me.

The frills on his neck were flexing as he, bit-by-bit, moved his head closer to my hand to sniff it.  I wiggled my finger and he bared his teeth.  I immediately moved my hand back which caused him to shrink back.

I slowly inched my hand back, trying to regain his trust, but he wouldn't try to sniff it.  So I left my hand where it was, hoping that he would approach it.  The small creature started to move forward, trying to examine the foreign object.  He sniffed it and saw that there was no immediate danger.  He continued to sniff up my arm until he lost interest.

I spent the longest time watching him watching the world.  Pondering what it was that he was thinking.  While watching him I soon found myself getting drowsy.

Something elbowed me in the ribs and I jumped awake.  I looked down to see the baby dragon cuddling up against my arm as it lay across my lap.  I smiled at the sight.

"Sytre."

My contentment turned to annoyance as my gaze was met by Hydrinn's cold stare.

"What?" I asked, annoyed.  Hydrinn responded by pointing behind her.  It took me a little bit to understand what was going on.  I realized that she was pointing at the sun.

"Yeah, so?" I shrugged.  She hit me up the side of my head.  "Sundown!" she yelled.  The dragon jerked awake at the sound of Hydrinn's voice.

My eyes went wide with fear.  I searched the horizon for a tree for cover for the night, but to no avail.  Only tall grass and flowers.

"See!  I told you!  You're such a frickin' idiot!  Now we're going to die and it's all your fault!  All becuase you couldn't kill a stupid little dragon!" she blabbered on about how everything was my fault.  As I was ignoring her I noticed a green glow out of my peripheral vision and looked around for it.  It was coming from the Eye of Ender on the Obsidian Ender Blade.  The little dragon burrowed himself under the blanket in fear as I pulled it out of its sheath.

Why is it glowing?  Is it some sort of homing signal?  Maybe it's trying to tell us something.

"Give me that!" Hydrinn yanked the blade out of my grasp and pulled it in front of her face to examine it.  Fury buzzed through my head, but I bottled it up inside.

"I remember mom telling me in one of her stories that the blade can create a force field." I suggested as nicely as I could.  I remembered the exact words that she said: 'The sword was glowing! I grabbed it and held it up. It sent out a pulse of purple light. All of the mobs backed away. A spider jumped out toward me, but hit some sort of force field and dropped down to the ground dead.'

"Yeah.  Like that'll help." she scoffed as she examined the sword.  "All of mom's stories are just for our entertainment.  It's not like we were supposed to learn anything from them."

She jumped off of Pitch and onto the ground.  She took it and pointed it upward.  "Go sword power!" she yelled.  "See.  Nothing!" she yelled in anger.  "It's all a load of bull!  We're going to die out here and it's all your fault!" she poked me hard in the chest.

I set the dragon down on Pitch's back and jumped onto the ground.  "You're doing it wrong." I pointed out.  "Oh yeah?  And what makes you think that?" she snapped.

I yanked it out of her hands and held it, blade-tip facing downward.  I took a deep breath and focused all of my energy toward the blade.  I closed my eyes and let the Ender Power rush through my veins.  I wasn't even trying to control it.

I lifted the sword a little and shot my eyes open just before I stabbed it into the ground.  A pulse of purple light went up and spread across the sky, creating a dome above us.

I lifted the sword off of the ground and looked at a very baffled Hydrinn in satisfaction.  "I told you.  You were doing wrong." I smirked.  Her jaw dropped as she looked around at the light purple dome.

"Alright.  Alright.  Good job." she said, still annoyed.  I smiled at my good work.  She praised me!  I did something right, in her eyes, for once!

Good, Sytre.  Very good.

Should we-

No.  Not yet.  He needs more time.  Very soon, though.
