Is it better to love and lose or never to love?

"Y/N?" A light knock came on the door as the girl peeked up from the bundle of blankets that covered her like a hood. They were set up like a hill, sitting on top of her. With a childish giggle, she wriggled from underneath the weight and headed to the door. She chimed, "Friday, let him in!"

The A.I. spoke. "Yes, Miss Y/n." The door slid open like elevator doors, revealing her favorite security guard. Kyle, was his name. He was incredibly friendly and loved to play around with her since her father was always so busy. Going back and forth between his homes, he barely ever had time for his daughter.

She squealed when he scooped her up. Her arms wrapped around his neck as she held on to him tightly, smiling. He grinned back at her, glancing around the room. "Made your own blanket fort, huh?" He mused, seeing the hill of blankets before slowly taking it and moving it with one hand. He collected it, moving it to make the area bigger.

Y/n nodded, kicking her legs excitedly. He sat with her, setting her on his lap as he picked up a toy, playing with her. It was a small figurine of the Hulk. She'd grown up with a lot of Avengers related toys that filled and stocked up different stores. Y/n clung onto Kyle's hand, placing Iron Man in it.

"That's Tony!" She cheered, giggling childishly and moving the figurine around. He smiled gently back at her, watching her move Tony to do some other inappropriate things. His face blanched and he nervously stuttered. "D-Don't do that. Don't forget; that man controls my pay too." She scrunched his nose at him, smiling. "Tony won't fire you. I won't let him!"

"You won't let me what?" The said adult mused, leaning on the door frame. Y/n jumped in between them, wiggling the figurine in between her hands. She stood in a defensive position, playfully glaring at Tony. "Don't worry; I'll protect you, Kyle!" The man chuckled, picking her up and holding her. "No need to protect me, Y/n."

Tony merely quirked a brow at her, pressing the arc reactor in the center of his chest. His suit formed around his body as he put out an arm, threatening to beam a hole into the ground. She yelped, climbing like a spider to hang off of Kyle's back like a monkey. "That's enough joking, Tony. You're scaring the child." Kyle snorted, rolling his eyes.

The man grumbled, his suit going away as he landed again. "Alright, alright. I have more work to attend to anyway. Keep her distracted, yeah?" He tossed his credit card to the man, nodding at him while Kyle clumsily picked it up, nearly dropping it. "Take her out for ice cream or something. We're just taking a break from the meeting."

Kyle nodded as he could practically feel the child's mood dampen. He moved Y/n to lean on the front of him again, "Yeah, I will." Tony nodded once more, ruffling Y/n's hair before moving away to exit the room. The doors closed behind him as Kyle set her down and smiled at her brightly. "Ready for some ice cream?"

Her head tilted downwards as she held onto his hand, nodding. "Daddy's busy again?"

"I'm sorry, sweetheart." He knelt down, smiling painfully at her before hugging her gently.

"It's okay," She teared up. "It's not your fault that Daddy doesn't care."

Her heart hammered in her chest, memories flooding into her brain as her eyes trailed up to the loud thunder that roamed over head. "He's nearly here," She could feel the rain travel through other areas, watching as it littered the streets from where the thunder wasn't far from. Swallowing harshly, she stood up and turned around.

On the hotel roof, there stood Peter as well. Of course, he was in his Spider-Man attire. Peter approached her. His movements seemed gentle and hesitant and she felt slightly guilty for making him feel so nervous since even one comment could affect her powers. "The thunder grew closer and you're always on edge when it's louder." He spoke.

A soft smile graced his features under his mask, making her approach him. "Thank you," She softly mumbled, pressing her face into his chest as she hugged him tightly. His breath hitched in his throat briefly as he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer, sighing softly. "Don't worry about it. I don't know what 'it' is, but I'm here for you." He assured her.

Her breathing regulated as her hands traced the entirety of his suit gently. Her eyes closed as she sighed, his arms comforting her as they rubbed her back. It soothed her, making her relax against him. The action also made her feel drowsy, but the lightning countered that. Another loud boom rang out, her body jumping at the sound.

"We should head back inside." His eyes were glued onto the distant sky. She nodded slowly, clinging onto him like she'd done with Kyle when she was a child. He didn't mind. His heart hammered in his chest and his cheeks turned pink underneath the coverage of his mask. Karen was about to ask him something, mentioning his current readings.

He quickly waved her off, whispering. "No, no. Karen, I'm fine!" He whisper-yelled as the A.I. quieted down and didn't speak again. He looked down at the slightly drowsy Y/n, pulling her close and setting her down at the staircase. She awoke slightly, realizing that Peter was attempting to change back into his regular outfit.

Her cheeks burned and she turned politely. After a few minutes, the zipping of a backpack made her turn back around as Peter picked her up again. She squeaked, mumbling at him and flailing her limbs slightly as she tried to resist the action. "I can walk myself, Parker!" He muttered, noticing the large eye bags underneath her eyes.

He shook his head, continuing to descent down the stairs as she limply relaxed in his arms, giving up on trying to resist. "You need sleep more than you need to walk, Y/n. Just trust me."

A silence fell upon them as she nodded, whispering. "Alright, I trust you."
