My dream was nothing but a simple memory, only it was vivid. I was running to help a wounded hawk, in the prairie. I had just gotten to the ranger's cabin, and didn't even have time to change when I got the call. I grabbed the animal medical kit and raced out the door and ran in the direction of the coordinates I was given. I broke into a sprint and forced the coordinates to implant them selves in my eyes, for me not to forget them.
While I ran I passed a girl, she was tall with long dark brown hair pulled back into a ponytail. She stared blankly at me; with her electric blue eyes; for a moment, then took off after me. I didn't even notice she was behind me until I slid to a stop near a ledge, and she stopped beside me; it was Jessica; breathing hard. I slowly walked up the bird that lied on the ground near the ledge, oddly it was almost completely black with brown wing and tail tips, and white around it's eyes, and it's wing bent at an odd angle. "Shhhhhhhh, easy girl." I slowly whispered to the scared hawk.
I slowly bent down and stroked her head, she settled down to the point that I could pick her up and carry her away from the ledge. I lowered myself carefully to the ground, sat in a cross legged on the ground, and lied her in my lap. She stayed there with her head on my bare leg and her claws on my ankle. I said "Will you help me by opening the medical kit please?" and she nodded. She opened the case and helped me fix the hawk's broken wing.
It only took three hours with the both of us to set and bandage her wing. I stood and gently held her in my arms. "Hmm. I think i'll name you Night." I said to the hawk. Night cawed, it was like that was her name and I just called her. "So, I'm Jessica, and you are?" the girl said to me.
I looked at her, stretched out my hand, and said "I'm Lierra." Jessica grabbed my hand and shook it. She grabbed the medical kit, and we started to walk back to ranger's cabin. The summer sun was just raising to reach the top of the trees. "So do you have family up here?" I asked while we walked through the thin forest.
Jessica looked at me and said "My dad, uncle, and I came up here on vacation." I nodded and said "My mom and I live about four miles north of here." "Don't you have a dad?" she asked me. I looked away and was silent. I could tell she wanted me to answer, but didn't push it.
When we finally got to the ranger's cabin, my mom was talking to two men. The men were Victor and Logan, as I now know their names. We were just a foot away from them when I sighed and said "He...he died in war before I was born." Jessica walked up to them and said something, that I couldn't hear. "Hey mom we need to care for Night here." I said while I motioned to the hawk in my arms.
"Is this the hawk you got called out to help?" she asked me. I didn't realize that we were both still in our running gear, in front of the three visitors. I smiled and said "Yeah, she was perfect. She was calm, listened very well, and allowed Jessica to help fix her wing." Kacie walked out of the cabin and said "Hey, Roses, your off the rest of the day. Go home and care for your new friend." My mother and I looked at each other, then back at Kacie, and we laughed at the comment.
Voices started to become hazy and became clearer with every passing moment. I opened my eyes to see a blank white ceiling, I had an IV, and a heart monitor. My heart rate was slow and steady so I decided to keep it that way, I didn't move, and closed my eyes. I knew I was still in my old clothes and was grateful for the fact that they didn't change my clothes. I heard the door creak open and many people walk in "So this is Logan's daughter huh?" One of the voices said.
I felt a hand touch my arm and a monotone voice say "Her skin is warm. Think she has a fever?" I had to fight the urge to smile and heard a female voice say "No she's more animal than she is human, her skin is going to be warmer. It's same with Victor, Logan, and myself." I heard people walk out and the door shut behind them, I still felt like I was being watched and sure enough Jessica, Logan, and Victor had stayed behind. I let my mind wander back into the memory I just had, I can't believe that jerk was able to get into my house and set that bomb and I didn't even notice.
