I woke up in an unfamiliar location. Some sort of glass room. On the other side, stood Natasha Romanoff. Everything that had happened came back to me and I stand and put my hand on the glass. "What's your name, Shadow?" Natasha asks and I grin at her through the glass. The smile didn't reach my eyes. After all, I was just acting. "Y/n" I answer honestly. "Last name?" she presses. "Don't have one, I never knew my parents" I continue. It was the truth. "I know who you are y/n" she stares at me and I look at her confused. "Elaborate please" I say and she continues to stare. "You're from Hydra. Or at least, you were last time you attacked S.H.I.E.L.D" she tells me and my heart stops, but I keep the calm expression on my face. "I have no idea what you're talking about sorry" I reply and maintain eye contact with the redhead.

"Of course you don't. I have evidence. Now my question is, what is a Hydra agent doing saving people from a burning building? I have two theories. Either this is a trap, or you're not part of Hydra anymore" she continues. "And I don't like taking chances, but the others have no idea of who you are and if you can prove to me that you're not here to kill someone then we'll keep it that way" I watch her as she speaks, calming myself down. "Hydra is in my past, I'd rather not bring it up. Painful memories" I drop the smiling facade and lie. "We'll see about that. But as long as I don't know your intentions, you're not being left alone" she snaps then pushes a button. Part of the glass lifts and I step out. "This way" she says and I bite back the urge to kill her.

Instead, I follow her to a room where Steve and Tony seem to be in a serious conversation. They stop when they see me and they both stand. "Her name is y/n" Nat mutters as she takes a seat behind them. "Y/n is it? Wanda tells us that you were putting out the fire in that building, I apologise for the team attacking you. We believed you were the one that started the fire" Steve says maturely and I smile. "It's fine, sorry for giving the wrong impression" I reply calmly. Tony steps forward and frowns. "How old are you kid?" he asks. "Sixteen" I answer casually. Steve and Tony share a look. "Where's your family?" Steve asks cautiously. "Dead" I say bluntly then focus on a random point in the room, acting like his question bothered me. "Sorry" Steve mumbles and out of the corner of my eye I see Tony study me.

He seems almost unconvinced about me, he clearly didn't take any bullshit. "You've got powers, how'd you get them" he asks, the look still on his face. I make eye contact and hesitate. "I was taken by an organisation thing that turned people into mutants" I explain and Natasha looks at me thoughtfully. "When did you get out of there?" She asks. "When I was eleven. I have little control over my powers now though" I continue, trying to avoid talking about Hydra. "Do you have a home y/n?" Steve asks and I shake my head. "I usually just stay wherever I can" I add on to my denial. "We've talked it over, you can stay here if you want. But you need to tell us more about you" he offered sincerely. Fools.

"Really? I don't want to be a burden" Natasha silently laughs behind the guys and my eyes narrow. I quickly widen them again, not wanting to cause suspicion. "You won't be. Any new recruit is welcome here, Tony can show you a room". I almost grin, this was too easy. I see Tony nod and then beckon me to follow him. We walk down a hallway and I start to reach for the knife around my waist. Before I can grab it though, someone runs up to us. "Mr Stark! I was looking for you, Happy told me you'd be her- Oh h-hi" the boy looked at Tony like he idolised him, he stuttered when he noticed me. "Hey" I give a slight wave, abandoning the knife.

He was kinda cute, brown eyes and hair, and a lot of energy. "Hey kid, this is y/n, a new recruit. Y/n this is Peter" Tony introduces us and Peter sticks out his hand. "Parker Peter- uh- Peter Parker" I smile slightly as he stumbles for words. Tony gives him an amused glance then turns to speak with him. Deciding not to eavesdrop, I go over the plan in my head. "Okay thanks Mr Stark, I'll see you around y/n" I snap back to reality as Peter says goodbye. "See ya" I smile at him and quickly focus on his mind, going through his memories. One memory stands out to me, a man with mechanic wings flying around a plane.

Then I notice the suit, Spider-Man. Shit, he's younger than I thought. As he leaves, I follow Iron Man again. He opens one of the doors and I step in, it's a normal room, nothing special. But somehow it's ten times more welcoming than Hydra's bunks. "This'll be your room" Tony says. "Thanks" I say, my mission completely slipping my mind. But it was too late, Tony had gone. I mentally curse myself. If the people at Hydra knew of my stupidity, I would be beaten. I sit down on the bed, staring at the wall coldly. God, I hated Hydra. But I couldn't escape, they'd kill me.

A knock at my door snapped me out of my thoughts. "Come in" I call. I look up as Natasha walks in, making sure to close the door behind her. I look back at the wall, there was no need to fake optimism around her. "You really got taken by a mutant organisation?" she asks and I give a slight nod. The memory hurt, but I'm good at blocking out pain. "Then Hydra got to you" she pieced it together. "Correct" I mumble. "Look y/n, I don't trust you, at all. But I do know what it's like to be part of the bad guys, an unwanted facility you could call it. I got a second chance. So I've made the decision to give you one too" she explains and I look at her, shocked.

"You were bad?" I ask and she nods. "But I changed. Look, if you need to talk about it to get it off your chest, I'm willing to help" she gives me a serious look but I appreciated her offer. "I didn't think you were the caring type" I say sarcastically, lying back on the bed. "Well there's usually more to people than what meets the eye" her statement hit me hard. She really was willing to look past that I came from Hydra. I push the thought away, I had a mission to focus on, there was no getting attached. "I'll get Steve to bring you dinner later, he'll want to talk to you. Until then, you'll find that there are clothes in the dresser. Tomorrow you'll get a tour" I watch as Natasha gets up and heads to the door.

"I really hope you're telling the truth about leaving Hydra" was her final sentence before she left and shut the door.
