The room went silent. Ashton looked to the floor and a tear rolled down the girl's cheek.
"Where is he? What happened?" I questioned.
The girl stepped forward. "Hi Faith. I don't know if you remember me, but I'm Skylar. Luke's girlfriend."
Suddenly, I'm overcome by a flashback. About a year ago, the band and their families went out for pizza. I remember seeing Skylar there, only I assumed she was Luke's sister. Her somber voice brings me back to reality.
"We're still waiting to find out about Luke. He went directly into surgery." She starts sobbing uncontrollably. Calum gently pulls her aside and tells me that Luke should be out soon. In the meantime, I try to gather as many clues as I can about the accident.
Michael sits down in a chair and begins to retell the events. " The road was icy. Bus's front wheel hit a patch and slid. The whole thing rolled into a ditch. We were all strapped into the front seats. Even Luke. He just happened to be on the side of impact."
Calum cleared his throat and finished what Michael was saying. " Yeah he hit his head real hard. I know that for sure. Something went flying through the air, too. Got me a little," he says, indicating a cut on his cheek, " I'm not sure what happened after that. Ambulances came, pulled us out of the wreckage. I didn't get the chance to see what kind of shape Luke was in." He stops, as if contemplating something, then sighs. Ashton walks over and glances out the window. Screams erupt as soon as he does so, making him back away into his chair.
We sat in silence until a nurse entered the room, with a practiced look of concern on her face. We all eagerly turned to her.
"I hate to have to tell you this, but it's my job to inform you that the doctor warned that something like this might happen." She spoke softly, carefully. "The surgery went great. Exactly as planned. However, Luke is still unconscious. And not from the anesthesia. Luke is in a coma."
The guys let loose silent tears as Skylar explodes into waterworks. I anxiously fumble with my bracelet. I don't know why, but for some reason, the way the nurse is speaking to us makes me want to punch her in the face.
"Only immediate family members can visit the patient as of now." We looked at each other impatiently. Luke's family hadn't arrived yet.
The nurse seemed to sense our tension, for she sighed and stated in a bored tone, "Follow me."
She led us down several artificially lit hallways and up a flight of stairs to room 221. Intensive care unit. The nurse left us alone at the closed door.
Ashton raised a trembling hand to the knob and soundlessly opened the door. I shed a tear at the sight of the blonde haired boy, lying still in the hospital bed.
*****sorry this was a pretty short chapter but I promise I'll update soon!
