My jaw dropped open and the room went silent.
"Y-you remember me?" I stuttered.
Luke nodded. Nobody knew what to say, or even how to interpret this information. A thousand thoughts swirled through my mind. 'Why would he remember me? Out of anyone, why me?'
"What do you remember?" Calum asked.
"Not much," Luke admitted, "just the name, mostly."
This gave everyone a little disappointment. We believed for a second that Luke remembered something of his past, though we were told that he wouldn't. Yet somehow, for some reason, he remembered my name.
We entered an undisturbed silence once again. I didn't know what to say, or if I should say anything at all. Something inside of me was searching for a silver lining.
I fiddled with my bracelet, realizing how much of a mess I would've been just then, had I not been wearing it. I could feel everyone's eyes on me, waiting for me to react, to smile, to cry, to say something. I didn't. I just sat there.
Something caused me to look up, after a few minutes, and survey everyone's faces. Most were expressions of self pity, though if there was such thing as a look literally shooting daggers, Skylar's glare towards me would've been a prime example.
My faith in my bracelet was beginning to wear thin under the pressure of being Luke's only memory. I stood, accidentally pushing my chair back behind me. My hands went to my head, desperately trying to push away any emotion.
"Faith?" Ashton asked, staring at me, worriedly.
I backed away as tears started to pool in my eyes. Liz and Luke were now both casting confused glances my way. The people that whispered behind my back at school were right.
I am a freak. I don't deserve to be Luke's memory.
My back hit the door and I fumbled for the handle, desperate to escape everyone's focus of attention, or the entire situation for that matter.
"I'm sorry," I whispered, before pulling the door open and slipping into the hall.
Ashton caught the door in my attempt to slam it and grabbed my shoulder. I pulled away, unsure of why. Of course, he was only trying to help me, but at the moment, I didn't care.
"Faith, wait!" He called, but I didn't pause, continuing to stumble down the hallways, a dripping mess of tears. I pressed the button once I reached the elevator, and waited impatiently for it to open. I had no clue why, but I yearned to get away from Ashton.
As soon as the doors parted, I entered and squeezed myself into a corner. A large hand gripped the shiny elevator door seconds before they resealed themselves and I sighed as a panting Ashton appeared.
He forced himself inside the elevator and stood at the entrance, trying to figure out the reason for my strange behavior.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
I shook my head, avoiding his eyes. Ashton wrapped a protective arm around my shoulder. Gently, he rocked me back and forth, until I eventually lifted my head. His concern faded, as did my sniffling.
"You do realize that I'm your ride home, right?" He asked cheekily, revealing a wide grin. I nodded, allowing a small smile myself. The elevator stopped descending and the doors jerked open. Ashton started forward, pulling me along with him.
We walked silently the rest of the way to Mum's car, which Ashton had borrowed. Once in, Ash started the car, but leaned back in his seat, glancing towards me. He sighed, and my eyes wandered to a few fangirls who straggled behind. Most had given up by now, as it's been weeks. A few desperate ones remained.
Ashton cleared his throat.
"You know, you can tell me about whatever's bothering you. I'm the best there is at keeping secrets."
I watched as the girls waved signs around.
"I'm fine. Really."
He raised an eyebrow, putting the car into reverse and backing out of the parking lot.
"You sure?"
I nodded. Ashton grinned, squeezing my shoulders.
"That's what I like to hear!" He beamed. The fangirls sat down on the curb, still displaying their signs. Their image was shrinking in my line of sight as we drove away from the hospital.
"Maybe we can come back and visit again tomorrow. That is, if it's okay with you," Ashton suggested.
I hummed in agreement as the girls disappeared in the distance.
