We stood, shaken, in the hall outside Luke's room, arranging plans for the night.
"I'm staying here," Liz insists. No one argues. Skylar volunteers to stay with her. "What about you boys?"
"We've got some rooms at the hotel down the street," Calum explains.
Ashton looks to me with those amber eyes of his. "You better get home, Fay. Mum's probably freaking out by now, trying to figure out where you are."
I fiddled nervously with my bracelet and pulled him farther down the hallway, away from the group. "I don't wanna go home, Ash."
He looked at me with concern. "Is something wrong, Faith?"
I sighed before summarizing the events at school today. Ashton pushed his hair out of his eyes and straightened his bandana.
"You know, you don't have to stand up for me and the band."
"I know. And it was careless of me, but you know how much it bothers me when someone talks badly about you."
Ashton managed a small smile, revealing his deep dimples. "Tell you what. I'll call Mum and tell her what's going on. I'll ask her if you can stay with me, up at the hotel." He pulled out his phone as I walked back to the group.
A short while later, Ashton returned and mouthed the words 'you're welcome'. I smiled and thanked him. Then, the small group parted ways.

Three floors up, Ashton unlocked a door to a small, dark room with two queen sized beds. I plopped down on the bed farthest from the door and watched as Ashton pulled his suitcase to the floor and began to unzip it. He tossed me one of his oversized t-shirts. I ran into the bathroom and changed. The shirt came down to my knees.
When I came back out, Ash was wearing a Nirvana tank top and shorts. He settled back into the remaining bed and I went back to my own.
"Was she mad?" I asked with caution.
Ashton chuckled. "Mum? Yeah, she uh, she said she wanted to talk when you got home."
"Perfect," I replied sarcastically. The tension was thick in the room. "Do you think Luke's gonna be better soon?"
He sighed. "I don't know, Faith. I hope so. Goodnight."
"I love you."

Three excruciating weeks have passed since that night at the hospital. Three weeks in which I started a new school, in which rumors were already circulating about me being some sort of freak. People avoided me at all costs, which didn't bother me one bit.
We frequently visited Luke, hoping that his condition had improved, though we knew better. Today was no different. We went to the hospital directly after school, as usual.
Sitting in those uncomfortable chairs making awkward small talk as Luke's lifeless form lay in the bed nearby was the norm now. We were discussing the topic of school lunches, when suddenly Skylar cries out.
"His hand! Luke's hand! Look! Quick!"
We all turned to see his left hand, which had been flattened, curl into a fist. I gasped as slowly, his eyelids fluttered open, revealing icy blue eyes.
