"Luke!" I scream, before slapping him just out of pure adrenaline. He falls back against the bed again, his eyes fluttering shut. The entire room sighs.

His eyes search the room in confusion. There is a hint of fear in his expression. As his gaze passes over me, something about his look softens, if only for a second.
Liz slowly stands up and stumbles to Luke's side. "Dear God, Luke, you had me so worried! How are you feeling, baby?" Her hand goes to touch his bandaged forehead. Luke withdraws back into his pillows, making Liz jerk her hand away. Luke's heart monitor beeps crazy irregular patterns.
We all watch in befuddlement at the mother-son interaction. Skylar chokes back a waterfall of tears. I brace myself against the wave of different emotions threatening to crush me.
"Luke?" Michael rings out, cautiously.
"Wh-what hap-... W-why am I here?" Luke coughs out, his voice raspy from weeks of no use.
"You were in an accident, hon. But let's not worry about that. It's all over now. You'll be better real soon, baby," Liz coos.
"Wh-why do you keep c-calling me that?"
"Baby? I've always called you that. Since you were little. Remember?" Liz says, her voice beginning to waver.
"No...I don't."
"You remember me, though, right?" Doubt trickles through the words.
"No. I don't believe I do. I'm sorry." Luke states hoarsely with a pang of guilt apparent. "I'm not sure that I could tell you who anyone here is. I'm really sorry."
Crying immediately follows this last statement, from almost everyone in the room. Ashton buries his face in his hands, then abruptly gets up and leaves the room. Luke shifts uncomfortably in the hospital bed.
The graying doctor enters the room suddenly, smiling as his eyes land upon Luke. Looking at our faces stained with tears, his grin fades.
"What's wrong?" he asks, a panicked expression taking over his wrinkled face.
I rise to my feet and rush through the door, apparently in search of Ashton, though the tears running down my cheeks say otherwise. Eventually, I find my brother, huddled in a corner of the initial waiting room we stayed in weeks ago. His loud sobs are muffled by the sleeves of his burgundy jacket.
"Ashton," I whisper. He doesn't react. I walk over and take a seat next to him. He slowly lifts his head to reveal red puffy eyes.
I haven't seen him cry this much since our father left, and that was almost twelve years ago. Ashton wraps his arm around me and cries into the top of my head, his salty tears wetting my blonde waves.
