chapter 20 - new girl

[day 19 of break]

Autumn and I have been hanging out in the 'Patient's Playroom' for the past week. So far we've been the only two people down here. No one came to check up on us after the first three days.

Today was just like any other day. After I woke up at 11 ish, I got dressed in the clothes Ashton brought for me, new every other day, and called in for breakfast. The nurse, Zoë, brought it to me 5 minutes later. I took my time eating it because I knew I wouldn't have anything else until after 3. That's when they served lunch. I don't understand why they don't serve it at 12 or 1 like normal people. But then again, who does? After I finished I put the empty tray on the bedside table. They knew to come at 12 for my breakfast so I could leave. It took approximately 7 minutes to get to the elevator and down to the room, I remembered. Once I got down there I waited for Autumn most days. She spent a bit more time getting ready and it didn't bother me.

Today might have been a little different than any other day.

There was a girl sitting in Autumn's usual chair. She had brown hair pulled back into a braid with a streak of blonde. Bleached, but faded. She was eating her food quietly and calmly. Her eyes were brown and they were very bright. I could see them from where I was standing by the elevator. She was dressed in a grey cardigan with black stretch pants. She had plum colored converse on her feet. She hadn't noticed me yet, and I was hoping she wouldn't.

I had never seen this girl down here before. When talking with the nurses, I heard no gossip of a new girl. So far it's been only me and Autumn down here.

"Michael, my bitch, where are you? My fucking cinnamon apple! Where are you?" Autumn screamed from the general elevator. The girl's head snapped up and she clutched her heart, looking around. She spots me from behind the food counter and her eyes widen. I don't know if it was because I was Michael Clifford, or because she was scared of me. Autumn turned the corner and gasped when she saw the brunette. The girl turned to Autumn and didn't move. I started to walk closer towards her slowly when I tripped over my untied shoelace and fell on my face. She jumped out of her seat and glanced between Autumn and I.

"Hey, it's ok. We're not going to hurt you. I'm Michael, and that's Autumn. We come here everyday. Are you knew here?" She didn't answer.

"Look. We haven't seen you around before, and we don't know you. Could you tell us who you are?" Autumn tried. The girl shook her head yes and motioned them both over. They walked over and sat a seat away from hers. They didn't want to make it seem like they were crowding her. She was looking at my face in awe. We'll...

"I'm Taylor. You're from 5 seconds of summer, right?" Of course that's the first question she asked. I sighed and nodded.

"Yep. I'm Michael Clifford, one fourth of the band 5sos."

"Not to be invading your space or anything, but why are you here?" Taylor asked quietly. I gave a small laugh and shook my head.

"It's ok. Really. As long as you don't tell anyone, I can tell you. I mean no one. I'm on break so people don't even know I'm here."

"I promise. It's not like there's anyone to tell. I'm stuck in here fir another month, and I'm assuming she already knows?" Taylor gestured to Autumn. Autumn huffed and sank lower in her seat.

"I have a name, ya know," Autumn snapped. Taylor gave her a disgusted look before turning back to me.

"Well, I have been having some trouble with Luke. He's been a real biotch lately and I don't know what to do about it. I kinda fancy him a bit and he treats me like shit. He treated me so bad I drank a lot and cut myself deep. I think Luke found me after I called him but I don't really remember," I admitted truthfully. She was looking at me in pity and I looked at my shoes. I felt a hand on my shoulder and it was Autumn. She sat down on my other side and hugged me. I let her hold me while I thought about all that has happened. The one question I always ask myself

What the fuck happened to the old Luke?
