"And when I drift off, I'll dream of you. It's always you."
Those were the last words Tony said to his battered and broken helmet. He reached forward to flick a switch, and the blue glow within its eyes faded to nothing. He hesitated, falling backward on his haunches. "Did you want to say anything? To June, anyone else?"
Iris gazed at the mask laying on the floor. The object gave off some sense of foreboding with its melted alloy and dead looking eyes. She straightened in her seat, using it to prop her body up. "I would yeah if you don't mind."
Tony nodded and turned to helmet around, flipping the switch inside to again activate the recording feature. He scooted back against the wall, doing his best to cover himself with a jacket.
Bathed in a blue glow, Iris looked deep into the eyes of the helmet, imagining how she looked. Blush, foundation, and concealer smeared, nearly completely gone; eyes bloodshot; skin wrapped tightly around her bones, and whatever muscle she had before Titan gone; hair messy and pulled over one shoulder; a dead woman walking.
She cleared her throat and spoke.
"Um, hi I suppose. I don't know who I'm giving this too." She paused. "Actually, I do. June, I know, I hope you're out there somewhere. I hope you're with mom and dad right now, wondering where the hell I am. Or maybe you've seen the footage from New York, guessed relativly where I am, and you've shown it to them. Maybe all three of you have no clue, and that's the best I can hope for.
"June, I-I want to apologize, for a lot of things. As cliche and stupid as it sounds, this may be the last time I'll ever talk to you, I might die out here. I should probably say where I am, or where I think I am. I'm in space, with a chick called Nebula and Tony Stark, the Tony Stark." Iris chuckled and looked down.
"How dumb is that?" She felt tears sting her eyes out of nowhere. "We lost June-bug, I lost. I lost people I didn't think I could lose anymore. Stephen was with me, and he's gone. God, what am I supposed to do?" Iris looked at the helmet again.
"I should probably apologize like I was going too." She laughed and shook her head, and muttered quietly, "What am I going to do with myself?"
Fixing her eyes on the blue eyes of the helmet, Iris took a deep breath. "I'm so sorry for leaving you, I guess... I guess I wanted to keep you safe somehow, which is stupid because I know that's all you want for me, and you can handle yourself perfectly fine, much better than I can.
"I'm sorry for cutting you out of my life for that one year that I never apologized for, that was stupid and petty and selfish of me. I suppose I'm sorry for a lot of things, too many for that matter.
"Food ran out, I think yesterday, and same goes for water, I've honestly lost track at this point. Oxygen is gone in the morning, which will probably kill two out of the three of us, I don't know if Nebula needs to breathe." Tony chuckled from the wall, and Iris smiled.
"That's Tony, thank God he can fix things, the guy bought us about two days of flight. That got us away from Titan, and... now we're in the middle of nowhere, literally. I have no idea where we are, Nebula doesn't, Tony doesn't have a clue-"
"A small one."
"Shut it!" Iris pointed at Tony, and he snickered. "That would be Tony again, being an asshole-"
"Pot, kettle black."
Iris wished she had something to throw at him and the strength. But she had neither, and instead, turned back to the recording helmet.
"Anyway, back to more morbid matters, they might never find our bodies, whoever they might be. They might not even know we're gone, and there's a good chance you'll never see me again. There's a high chance you'll never see or hear this message, and I suppose I'm okay with that, somewhat.
"If you do see this, you cannot, under any circumstances, blame yourself. At all. If you do that, I'll have no choice but to haunt you for the rest of eternity, I'll hover over your shoulder and you'll hate every minute of it." Tony raised an eyebrow as if asking a silent, sarcastic question. Iris made a face.
"You're not allowed to blame yourself, neither are mom and dad. If we do happen to make it back, alive, the first thing I'm going to do is call you and make sure you're alive and, again, not condemning yourself for this mess we're in."
Iris paused, not quite knowing what to say next. She'd said everything she'd wanted to in the first place, and there was nothing else that came to mind. She cleared her throat, intending to give some sort of an outro.
"I guess that's it. When I get back, I'll tell you all of the fun and stupid things I've done in the past three weeks, including nearly killing myself at least three times. Love you." Tony was about to reach forward when Iris stopped him, a smile growing on her lips.
"And uh, I had Pad Thai in my fridge at home, and since that's in shambles, I would very much like you to make me some, that'd be great." She nodded, and the billionaire reached from behind and turned the mask off.
The cabin's blue light faded, and they were left mostly in the dark. Iris shifted in her seat, returning to her previous position, curling up into a ball. Tony cleared his throat from the corner. "Supergirl, its been fun."
"Couldn't agree more, Tony. See you on the other side?"
"You'd better."
Iris smiled and closed her eyes. It had taken her the majority of the time on the space ship to come to terms with the fact, at least the very high chance, that she, Tony, and Nebula would'not make it back to Earth.
Iris wasn't prepared for that thought at first, she still wanted to kick Thanos's ass, for sure, that was nearly all she thought about the first two weeks, but after that, revenge had begun to wear off, and a sort of gloominess settled in.
Again, it could've been the malnourishment.
Besides, Iris didn't have anywhere near the strength she would need if she were to throw Thanos off a cliff, it had taken almost ten people just to hold him down.
And then she'd gone and screwed the whole thing up, but she tried not to think about that much.
Nebula interrupted her thoughts when she walked into the room. Iris hardly heard her footsteps as she padded over to Tony, picked him up, and propped him upright in the other chair.
Iris opened her eyes and shot her a questioning look. The blue woman returned it with an unreadable one, but Iris could've sworn it had a touch of sympathy in it. "Get some sleep, I'll wake you if anything happens."
"You sure?"
Nebula turned around heading for the door. "Go to sleep."
