Iris had never heard a room be so quiet, you could literally hear a pin drop.

It was so silent, she could hear everyone in the room draw their breath in, and not let it out.

They're afraid, she mentally noted.

They should be.

A ghost of the voice that once commanded her thoughts peered out of the corners of her head, and Iris nearly jumped. It had been three weeks since that voice had spoken, and if she was honest, it scared the shit out of her.

Steve, the closest, must have seen something in her eyes because he took a step forward, gentle expression and all. "Iris, you should be asleep."

She didn't move, waiting to see if the voice in her head made another appearance. It didn't, so she took it upon herself to answer. "I asked a question."

"Iris I think you should rest before you get into any of this."

"I did, you all knocked me out for a solid half-a-dozen hours. I'm rested, and ready to kick ass, so I'll ask again: Where's Thanos."

"Dead," came a voice from the back of the room, deep and booming: Thor. Steve's shoulders sagged at the word, and the rest of the group parted like the red sea as Thor walked forward. "I've slain him myself."

Steve cleared his throat, muttering Thor's name under his breath, a clear warning to shut up. Thor approached her, something mixed with pity and anger in his eyes. "He's of no use to us."

Iris could feel her gaze harden, and fury swept through her bloodstream. "Are you the one to make that decision?"

"Are you?"

If the room was quiet before, it was now silent as a grave, even the machinery in the background seemed to sense this was a deeply serious matter and became hushed at Thor's words.

"Why is he dead?"

Thor shrugged and made to turn away. "He had nothing else for us." A pause. "He deserved to die."

He deserved to suffer in anguish, slowly, her inner demons seethed.

"He deserved to suffer." Damn her for agreeing with the voice in her head for once. Iris paused, taking a step toward Thor, her bravado and strength growing with each passing minute. "The infinity stones? I suppose you have those then."

That was followed by even more silence, and suddenly, Iris dreaded the answer they were going to give her.

Steve cleared his throat as Thor turned and began to walk away. "He didn't have them, Iris Thanos destroyed them. There's nothing we can do."
