Thirty Ninth chapter

Four's POV

After Tris' performance I go home avoiding everyone. People around me are either giving me confused looks or deadly glares so I just ignore them.

I go out of the university not even bothering to ask the principal for permission. I grab a cab and tell the driver Evelyn's address.

I start thinking about Tris.

¿Why did I do that? I love Tris, I am sure about it, but then why did I agree to kiss Lauren? Yeah, the offer, I thought my plan was perfect.

I would kiss Lauren, she would leave me alone and more important, Tris wouldn't find out. Obviously it didn't work.

I didn't realized I was fully crying until I heard the driver mutters something like "Ha! gaaay"

I ignore him, pay him and get off the vehicle. I take out my keys, open the door and close it, maybe with more force than necessary, alerting my mother of my presence.

- Who's there? - She asks. Her voice is coming from the kitchen.

- Me - I say, my voice empty, without emotion.

- Tobias? You should be.... - She stops herself when she sees my tears.

I sit down on the couch and she sits beside me.

- What happened? - She asks. I just shake my head.

She seems frustrated but then her eyes burn with anger.

- Is that girl isn't it? Tris? - I stay silent - She broke your heart!!! I told you she would and you didn't believe me!!!

- She...

- No - I interrupted her - She didn't break my heart - I say in a shaky voice and start sobbing. - I broke hers!!!

And with that I break down.

- Shhh - Evelyn says, patting my back - It will be OK, ¿What did you do?

- I... I kissed another girl-l an-d and she saw me! I promised I wouldn't break it!!

- Break what? - She asks.

- Her heart.

Evelyn opens her mouth to say something when the phone rings. She gets up and answers it.

- Hello? - She says, the voice on the other side of the phone says something and she looks at me with worry and confusion. - Is for you - She says after a moment.

For me? I get up and take the phone out of her hands.

- Hello? - I say.

- Is this... - The voice pauses for a moment - Tobias Eaten?

- Eaton - I correct - and yes, this is Tobias Eaton.

- This is Hodge, Are you in anyway related with Tris Matthews? - Hodge says. It's been a long time since I heard Tris' adoptive parents last name.

- Why? - I ask instead of answering.

- Please answer - His voice sounded impatient and I detected a little bit of pity in it.

- Yes, I am her boyfriend.... Ex-boyfriend - I wince when I say that- I don't really know.

- Sir, the flight from Atlanta to Texas crashes right after taking off and your girlfriend, Tris Matthews,  was in it. I am so sorry.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I start breathing heavily and my mother runs towards me.

- What happened? - She mouths at me.

- Where is she!? - I ask Hodge - How is she!? Please tell me something!!! Anything!! - I scream at the phone with more tears running down my face.

- Please, calm down Sir. She is in the hospital of the 3rd avenue. Go there and you will receive more information about her condition.

I hang up with out even saying thanks and start heading towards the door just to be stopped by Evelyn.

- What happened!? - She asks, more like demands.

- Tris, it seems that she took a plane to go back to Canada and got in the wrong one but the plane crashed and now she is in the hospital!!!, I need to go - I was pleading by the end. Evelyn covers her mouth and nods at me.

I run to my car and speed towards the hospital.

I kept my promise.

I didn't break Tris' heart.

I destroyed it.
