Footprints in the Snow (9)
Footprints in the snow
Two sets
along side each other
Straight lines
parallel to the other
Across the open field
Disappearing into the forest beyond
I drew heavily on my cigarette
and tossed it into the snow
watching as it melted
out of sight
I stepped into the first
Footprint
My foot fit perfectly
I stepped into the second
Footprint
My foot fit perfectly
I looked back at Richard
“Come on”
He stepped into the first
Footprint
His foot fit perfectly
I continued on
wondering
where the
Footprints
would lead us this time
What was at the end, This time?
Was it some
magical rendezvous place
or
a lonely, empty space?
I looked to my left
Richard
seemed to be thinking the same thing
As far as My eyes could see
the Snow
was undisturbed
except for the two sets of
Footprints
that we were now following
Suddenly
the
Footprints
stopped.
We stood in the open field
a mere two feet
apart from each other
“Want a cigarette?”
Richard
asked
I turned to my left
“Yes”
I looked beyond the
Footprints
to the trees beyond
the hill
I slid down
a year earlier
Why, now, did the
Footprints
end here
“Donna?”
I turned to my left
Richard’s
voice had a strange
sound
to it
Richard
was now
five feet
from me
As I watched
he continued to move farther away
even though
both of us were still standing in the last
Footprints
“Richard”
I screamed
He was now
20 feet
or farther away
“Richard”
I screamed again
It started to snow
a wind started to blow
“Richard”
I screamed again
A thought
struck me
Had this all been a dream?
“Richard”
