the door cracked open, unleashing a child with squinty eyes and a head full of fading dreams and curls.

well, she wasn't a child, but the crumpled paper skin of her face made her seem so small. so oblivious to the world around her.

the world she ruled.

her tired eyes caught my heavy frame as i stood in the sunlit room, a smile tip-toeing across rose-stained cheeks.

"i thought i heard your voice." she hummed, the crown of her affection gracing my head like the warm anointing oil of priests.
