Moments after Arny drove off, Peter O’Mallick stumbled out of the alley, fumbling to get his sunglasses back on. The deep pounding in his head was so severe that his nose bled in a thick stream from his left nostril. And some damn fool was tilting the street on him, making it difficult to walk straight or completely upright.
As the pain faded slightly to a low dull throb, he regained more of his balance.
He closed his eyes for a moment but all he could see was the fresh coat of crimson and brain matter splattered on the alley wall behind him, the startled look on the face of the mugger as the back of his head exploded like he'd just been sucking on the barrel of a shotgun.
Peter had been startled to see the dramatic effect of his death stare hadn’t faded even though he’d used it three times in the last 24 hours. His original thought had been that the power had been pent-up within him for a long time and that was what caused the man’s head to explode back in Johnnie’s Bar and Grill. But that didn’t seem to be the case now that he let the power of his curse out again.
His power seemed just as strong.
And, strangely enough, Peter himself felt stronger, had more energy than he'd had in years. Part of him wanted to attribute it to the fact that he finally felt in control of himself, in control of this curse he'd lived with his entire life. But another part of him knew that there was more to it. Something preternatural about the way each death provided him with an energy, a power that seemed to pulse through his veins.
