I often find myself drowning,
only to break the surface
and gasp for air moments later.
my lungs don't fail me
and my body stays afloat,
even as I catch a glimpse
of what lies underneath the water.
this is what life is like—
we drown,
we rise,
we breathe.

I find comfort here
in the stillness
of the waters.
I know that my head
won't stay under
until the life leaves my body
and I know that
I will see the sun rise
again in the morning.
drowning
doesn't always
lead to the end.
it serves as a reminder
that I'm human,
that mortality
thrums through my veins,
that I'm alive.
alive and still breathing.

and we all want to feel alive,
even if life brings nothing
but destruction and pain.

we drown,
we rise,
we breathe.
that is how
we survive.
