The Marketplace

She walked through the center of the Marketplace. Whenever she wasn't training, she came here to watch the people. She knew how to remain hidden. She knew how to be inconspicuous.

She pulled her scarf over her head as she looked over her shoulder. She was always looking over her shoulder. She was a soldier, always on her guard. As part of Saw Gerrera's crew, she had to remain vigilant.

Jyn Erso scanned the Marketplace, making a mental note of her surroundings. The Marketplace of Jedha was always busy with all sorts of species from around the Galaxy.

Jyn approached the stands which offered fresh food, which was hard to come by nowadays. As she got closer, the aroma of spices and fresh bread washed over her. Jyn's stomach growled.

When had she last eaten fresh bread?

"Oof!"

Something or someone had just bumped into her.

"I'm sorry!" A small, dark-haired girl shouted as she ran to the stand offering fresh bread.

"I apologize. My daughter gets so excited coming here. She doesn't pay attention to where she's going," a man with the same colored hair as his daughter approached Jyn.

Jyn looked at the small girl smiling and laughing as she inspected the baked goods. Jyn felt a tear roll down her cheek. She hastily wiped it away. She turned back to face the father.

"It's okay. I once knew a girl like her."

Jyn took one last wistful look and walked away.

***
Jyn hurried through the streets of the Marketplace, pulling her headscarf further down to cover her hair. Her thoughts still dwelled on the father and daughter she saw moments ago.

Jyn glanced over her shoulder, almost bumping into a jewelry stand. She was trained to keep her emotions hidden. Emotion was weakness. Saw had taught her that well, but the image of the father and daughter had affected her more than it should have. Seeing them happy...

Jyn was back on Coruscant. Mac-Vee had just tucked her into bed.

"When will papa be home?"

"Soon, Child"

Jyn and Mac-Vee were watching Jyn's favorite holodrama, The Octave Stairway.

"I wish papa was here."

"He will be back soon. Don't fret, Little One."

It was easier for her to think her father was dead.
He had abandoned Jyn. Her mother was murdered right in front of her eyes. And her father had done nothing.

Jyn walked faster, dust swirling around her. The wind was picking up, hair strands had escaped her headscarf despite her best attempts to stay concealed.

My Stardust

Jyn's heart pounded. She looked around. She was on the edge of the Marketplace now, no one was around.

Galen Erso is dead.

A/N: This was my 1st attempt at writing a one-shot, a dabble, a snapshot, whatever you want to call it. Jyn Erso has become one of my favorite characters and I like to imagine what her life was like before the events of Rogue One. Thank you for reading! As always, advice and feedback is much appreciated!
