To Forgive

Jyn approached the curtained doorway and paused. She shuffled her feet and took a big breath before stepping through the dirty, ragged fabric.

Her friend, Rostek Chiryon, was laying in a bed in the small chamber which overlooked the Valley of the Holy City.

She heard his ragged breathing as she quietly walked to his bedside.

"Jyn, " a weak voice called in the gloom.

"Ros, how are you feeling?"

"Better every day, Jyn."

"I'm so sorry..."

Rostek held up his hand before Jyn could finish her rehearsed speech. She had gone over it a thousand times in her mind ever since that day when everything went wrong during the mission.

"Jyn, it's not your fault."

"Not my fault? Two of our crew died because of me!"
Tears streamed down her dirt-stained face. She had promised herself she wouldn't show weakness in front of her friend.

"Jyn, it was beyond your control, beyond anyone's control. How were we supposed to know the Empire was going to show up when they did?"

"Our intel was wrong, " Jyn replied bitterly.

Rostek extended a wrapped hand towards her.

Jyn hesitantly took his hand in hers.

"You are a good soldier, Jyn. I've trained you ever since Saw brought you here to us."

"I still have a lot to learn."

Rostek coughed. "We all do, Kid, we all do."

"If only I would have..."

"Have what, Jyn? Died too?"

"It's my fault you lost your leg, " Jyn wiped her face with her free hand.

"No. It's my own damn fault. I became distracted..unfocused. Don't put this on you."

"If only I was a Jedi, you know, like those in the old stories."

Rostek's sharp laugh turned into a coughing fit.

"And what would you do if you were a Jedi?"

"I would save everybody."

Rostek shook his head sadly. "Jyn, you can't play god."

"Please forgive me."

"There is nothing to forgive. You...need to forgive yourself ."

Jyn let her tears continue to fall.
