I landed in a deep snow drift, the bitter cold as extreme as the withering heat from the first circle. I groaned as Daniel swooped down towards me, concern written all over his face as he bit his lip.
"Mia! Are you okay?"
"Just a little sore, that's all. What was that?"
"That was an Icethor. A giant golem made of ice and snow." Daniel glanced around as he helped me up. "We need to get moving."
We spread our wings, ready to take to the sky, but a giant form rose from a nearby snow drift.
"What's that?"
The mound like shape lumbered towards us, the ground shaking with every step. Daniel launched himself into the air, but the ground was shaking so much, I couldn't stand up long enough to launch off before I was sent toppling down again. The air became frigid, and I soon gave up on trying to stand, instead I huddled on the ground, my wings wrapped around me.
"Mia! Come on, you need to get up." I could hear the desperation in Daniel's voice, but I didn't have the strength to look up and comfort him.
The shaking became stronger, I bounced along the ground like a jumping bean on a sugar rush. Daniel's desperate cries became more distant, as if he was getting further away.
I nestled further into my soft, baby wings. They were soft, softer than Daniel's stronger wings. Mine were more downy, like a newborn chick's feathers, with only hints of mature feathers. His was more like the scratchy, strong, thick feathers of a full grown bird.
The ground stopped shaking.
Had I fallen asleep?
No, my dreams would never involve me being lifted by the coldest thing I've ever felt, my dreams never consisted of the gaping hole that I hung suspended from, my dreams never held me transfixed in horror as I fell towards the cavernous mouth. The sharp teeth were clear, made of ice, cut in such a fashion that the they sparkled with light, but not enough to reveal the what laid hidden beneath the blanket of darkness.
I was falling towards the monster's mouth, my arms spinning around as I tried to catch my balance, my wings flung out, trying to catch a breeze.
I could hear my name being called, the franticness growing with each shrill cry.
Just as I was about to be engulfed in darkness, a hand reached out and snatched me, taking me away from the cavernous mouth.
"Mia! Are you okay?" Daniel flew up to me as I looked up at my rescuer.
His black hair spiked towards the front, its tips tickling my nose as he looked at me, a slight snarl on his lips.
"You'd do better to listen to your mentor, fledgling."
I scowled at him.
"I was doing just fine before. Daniel would have helped me."
The stranger blinked his hazel eyes in surprise.
Guess he isn't used to someone talking back to him.
"Hold your tongue, you incomplete fool."
Incomplete? What does he mean?
"Thank you so much for saving Myria." Daniel clapped the stranger on the shoulder.
"This isn't the time for talking! It's time for mauling! That thing is still there, and it's coming out way!" I yelled as I aimed a bolt of light at the monster.
Both of the men bolted into the air, with me close behind.
Daniel looked at the stranger and nodded. The two of them swooped in and dodged the monster's enormous arms. Red eyes glared at the two Fallen as they both shot the monster in perfect sync. The dodged and turned, leaving the icy monster confused. They floated over to me and Daniel grabbed my hand.
"Come on! Let's go before it regains its clarity of mind!"
We shot off, leaving the monster far behind in a matter of minutes.
The stranger said as we slowed down. "As I was about to say before that Icethor interrupted us, don't mention it. You saved me, I saved your foolish trainee. We're even now. You should take better care of her, you'd think that you would have learned after the last one-her death was also brought about by your lack of attendance and careful watching."
"I know. It's hard knowing that the reason she died was because I wasn't taking care of her properly."
Did Daniel just received reprimand from a stranger? The world sure is full of surprises today.
The stranger looked at Daniel. He glanced away, appearing to be satisfied with what he found.
"We need to find shelter. It'll be dark soon and your trainee looks ready to fall over any second with cold."
He beckoned to us as he turned to leave.
I looked at Daniel. He nodded.
"We can trust him."
I shrugged as I followed him. I noted the strong beats of his russet wings.
He must fly a lot.
He led us to a house, not that much different from the ones I saw at The Fort.
We entered in and I rushed over to a lot fire.
"Daniel, who is this person?" I ask as I warm my hands.
"Allow me to introduce myself, you incompetent, incomplete fool. My name is Jake. And you are asking the one person who would never tell you the truth. You are asking the fallen I was cloned from." The stranger bowed mockingly.
Cloned from? What in the nine circles does that mean?
I glanced from Daniel to Jake, then Back to Daniel.
"What does he mean?" I look at Daniel, hoping he could shed some light on the situation.
"What does he mean about what?" Daniel looked me in the eye and I could tell he didn't want to talk about it.
He never tells me anything unless I push him for it.
I felt disappointed. Daniel glanced at Jake and reached for my hand. I danced away.
"Do you really deserve my trust when you don't trust me?"
"Mia. I-"
I raise my hand. "I don't want to hear any excuses. You never tell me anything unless I make you. Trust is a two-way street. I trust you-like I have a choice. But you don't trust me. Why? What's so important that you can't share it with me?"
